Synopsis Renewable Energy Resource Utilization in Nigeria by : Osahon Omoregie
The urgent need to de-carbonize the world economies, ensure energy security and sustainable development has engender a global resort to renewable energy resource utilization. While some jurisdictions are investing heavily on its deployment, Nigeria seems to be lagging behind, perhaps, due to its continuous reliance on a fossil fuel driven economy and other systemic challenges. The paper explore the potentials and benefits of renewable energy resource utilization in Nigeria. The paper argue that in line with global trends, if Nigeria truly desire to meet its commitments under the Paris Accord and Sustainable Development Goals targets, it should accelerate its investment and development of renewable energy resources. To surmount barriers and challenges militating against Nigeria's renewable energy agenda, the researcher concludes by recommending the removal of fuel subsidy to allow for a level playing ground for investors; and the need to leverage on investment opportunities by enacting fiscal laws and policies that encourage foreign investment, promote public private partnerships, facilitate Research and Development, ensure efficient technology transfer, and proper development of renewable energy resources in the country.

Synopsis Renewable Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in Nigeria by : George Umeji
The impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth in Nigeria, is aimed at establishing the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in Nigeria. The oil price volatility in the international oil market in the last decade has led to a substantial rise in the demand for renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, the provision of energy needed for growth and at the same time mitigating against its hazardous effects on the environment is a major world problem. The paper used secondary data from the World Bank data bank from 1990 to 2020 for its analysis. It used Toda-Yamamoto augmented granger causality test to test for the nature of the relationship between the two variables and Auto Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) bounds test to examine the impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth. The study found a bi-directional relationship between the variables. The regression results also showed a significant positive impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth. The work concluded that renewable energy consumption enhances economic growth in Nigeria. It therefore, recommends that government should encourage investments in the renewable energy sector by providing conducive business environment and also create awareness on the importance of the use of renewable energy in the country.

Synopsis Challenges and Opportunities of Sustainable Electricity Access in Nigeria by : Emmanuel Odoyi
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 1.7, University of Applied Sciences Berlin (Engineering), course: Sustainable Development, language: English, abstract: Electricity is an important feature for economic development. The necessity lies in the fact that electricity affects every aspect of our economy. Nigeria should aim towards sustainable electricity access to its citizens. Nigeria must have a stable electrical energy supply to meet the market, basic needs of the people. A nation whose energy supply is not reliable does not help in the development of the national economy. Nigeria is a nation with more than 162 million inhabitants with less electric access to both rural and urban areas. This study has reviewed and analyzed the challenges and opportunities facing Electricity Access in Nigeria. The study has employed approach to good features of sustainable development system in the Nigerian electrical energy sector by proposing a sustainable strategies and alternatives for energy access through the use of solar power, wind and hydro power, and Bio-mass . Also, the study clearly explained and analyzed the problems facing the electricity in Nigeria. Thus, this study has used literature review methods, to gather information’s on Energy Sector in general and existing literatures on the Nigeria Energy Sector as well as a SWOT/PEST Matrix of the Nigerian Energy sector.

Synopsis Development of Renewable Energy Resources for Sustainable Energy Use in Nigeria by : Olotu Yahaya
This review examines the potentials of renewable energy resources in Nigeria which is aimed at reducing dependence on the carbon-based energy sources. The theoretical and technical potentials of renewable energy resources (solar radiation, biogas, wind, and hydropower energy) indicated that Nigeria has strong potential of meeting energy demand for agricultural, domestic and industrial without relying on fossil fuel. An average daily solar radiation (Rs) and wind energy of 12.1MJ/m2 to 28.5 MJ/m2, 3.3 m/s to 7.0 m/s in the coastal to the northern part of the country could generate 427,000MW, hydropower, biogas and wind energy were estimated to have energy potentials of 11,000MW and 6.6 million (m3) of biogas daily. The CO2 emits from renewable energy source is very low when compared with the conventional energy source and this makes it to be environmentally and human friendly. The current energy stress in Nigeria can be improved by formulating robust energy-based policies and researches capable of achieving some level of renewable energy development. Thus, strong internship between the developed world where lot of discoveries and breakthrough had made on the subject matter and developing is greatly encouraged.

Synopsis Environmental Safe Use of Coal in the Energy Mix in Nigeria by : Luqman Adedokun
Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, University of Ibadan (Centre for Petroleum Energy Economics and Law), course: Environmental Law and Policy I, language: English, abstract: Access to energy in the form of electricity undoubtedly plays an important role in nation’s growth, economic development, healthcare delivery, addressing energy poverty, supporting urbanization, delivering competitive energy to developing and developed countries alike and generally human well-being. There are different sources of electricity; and generation of electricity from them equally affect human well– being and the environment. Some of the notable sources of electricity or energy are: solar, fossil fuels, biogas, solid biomass, nuclear, hydropower. This work attempts to examine the environmental safety of coal use vis-a -vis power provision in Nigeria. Coal is a fossil fuel formed from decomposition of organic materials subjected to geological heat and pressure for millions of years. It is considered a non– renewable energy source because it cannot be replenished within human time frame. Coal is a combustible black or brownish – black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or vein called coal beds or coal steams. The United States Energy Information Administration highlighting the importance and cheaper cost of coal in energy mix states that global consumption is likely to increase by 48%from 6 .7 million metric tons to an estimated 9. 98 billion short tons by 2030. Coal as an energy source contributes about 30% of the United States of America electricity generation, 93% of South Africa electricity generation, and 79% of the People’s Republic of China electricity generation. Going by this statistics and the fact that coal is cheap source for electricity generation, it is safe to assert that Nigeria has the potentials to produce cheaper electricity to solve its dearth of electricity generation and supply using coal. Synopsis Energy Resources in Africa by : Herick Othieno
This book provides information on the distribution of the available energy resources throughout the continent and how it is linked to the development of individual states. Africa is considered one of the poorest continents in the world, mainly because its development has historically depended on imported resources including technical expertise. This view and its associated resource management strategy are based on the perception that Africa lacks sufficient energy resources to drive its development agenda. Analyses of individual countries’ energy potentials, exploitation levels and distribution mechanisms are provided with a view to identifying additional factors that are stifling Africa’s economic development. One critical factor is the relationship between available energy resources and the energy mixes chosen by different states, and how these can be exploited to produce the right blend of energy for various applications such as industrial, transport, domestic, and recreational uses. The authors provide an in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources in terms of their environmental, industrialization and distribution costs, impacts, and the development options best suited for improving Africa’s economic situation. This analysis is based on the assertion that Africa is indeed blessed with abundant energy resources, which have not been effectively exploited. The book not only reviews Africa’s energy situation in general, but also reveals that, while there are certainly circumstances peculiar to individual countries, the similarities, especially within Sub-Saharan African countries, outweigh the differences. That being said, the challenges and available opportunities in each country should be viewed with due consideration given to the prevailing national resource management environment. Many initiatives in Africa fail because of the many loopholes in the management structures, which allow corruption, theft, and mere selfishness to thrive. In addition to the negative impacts of these factors on implementation activities, there is also a general lack of institutional support for initiatives that could otherwise be very progressive. Thus, taken together, these retrogressive practices stifle African energy development plans. The book offers a valuable guide for developers, investors, researchers and environmentalist, providing in-depth insights on the relationship between available energy resources and development trends in Africa. "By harnessing the wind and sun, your vast geothermal energy and rivers for hydropower, you can turn this climate threat into an economic opportunity." US President Obama's address to the African Union (2015)
