Taking the long view of conflicts between truth and political power What role does truth play in government? In context of recent political discourse around the globe—and especially in the United States—it is easy to believe that truth, in the form of indisputable facts, is a matter of debate. But it's also important to remember that since ancient times, every religious and philosophical tradition has wrestled with this question. In this volume, scholars representing ten traditions—Western and Eastern, religious and secular—address the nature of truth and its role in government. Among the questions they address: When is deception permissible, or even a good thing? What remedies are necessary and useful when governments fail in their responsibilities to be truthful? The authors consider the relationship between truth and governance in democracies, but also in non-democratic regimes. Although democracy is distinctive in requiring truth as a fundamental basis for governing, non-democratic forms of government also cannot do without truth entirely. If ministers cannot give candid advice to rulers, the government's policies are likely to proceed on false premises and therefore fail. If rulers do not speak truthfully to their people, trust will erode. Each author in this book addresses a common set of issues: the nature of truth; the morality of truth-telling; the nature of government, which shapes each tradition's understanding of the relationship between governance and truth; the legitimacy and limits of regulating speech; and remedies when truth becomes divorced from governance. Truth and Governance will open readers' eyes to the variety of possible approaches to the relationship between truth and governance. Readers will find views they thought self-evident challenged and will come away with a greater understanding of the importance of truth and truth-telling, and of how to counter deliberate deception.

The present work is an humble attempt to gather together different views of western scholars expressed by them from time to time in the form of research works, research papers, writings, contribution into Encyclopaedia, Journals, Magazines and invited papers/articles that appeared from time to time in different Arya Magazines . Through these views we discover in Dayananda a great nationalist, great socialist, great democrat, great humanist, great animist, great egalitarian, great utilitarian, great liberator even before the birth of these ideas in the Indian state. He was a staunch supporter of human rights, social justice and equality irrespective of gender, caste, class, race, religion and region. At the same time he was a great philosopher, great thinker, great Vedic scholar and what not. This book should not be taken as merely a compilation of western scholars' views about Rishi Dayananda, but a compendium of live telecast of the Dayananda's movement in India in 19th century and his domination of Indian scenario enslaved then politically and economically by Christians, religiously by Muslims and culturally by Hindu Pundits. One will find how Rishi Dayananda frustrated the political motives of British rulers, evangelical agenda of Christian missionaries and Muslim Maulvis and exposed the dogmatic Hindu Priesthood by virtue of his sharp intellect, indomitable oratory, brave and bold attacks and formidable spiritual power. The readers of this book should not expect always a phraseology of praise from the western scholars and thinkers in respect of Dayanand. They have their own understanding of Dayanand. Sometimes they are led by their own misconstrued notions and prejudices. Sometimes they try to understand Dayanand in the light of their own philosophical, cultural and religious background which stands in sharp contrast to that of the East. Their disputed observations have been duly answered by the author of the present lines in the footnotes. The footnotes supplied by the by the author of present lines contains author's name. The footnotes that do not contain any mention of a name have been contributed by the original reviewers of Dayanand. Through the observations of western scholars, one thing is clear that the western scholarship could not afford analysis of India without analysing Dayanand's role. Dayanand was hailed as a seer and Rishi. This shows the importance Dayanand had in the eyes of western scholarship not only for the making of modern India but for the entire humanity in the 19th century.

The present volume, comprising ninteen articles by renowned scholars, is divided into three sections, namely, Buddhist Jaina and Hindu Philsosphical Researches. The articles in Hindu section take a comperative base. K.K.Raj compares the Buddhist and Mimamsa views on Laksana. K. Bhattacharya speaks of grammarians and philososphers regarding post-Panini grammarians on a certain anusasana. R.C.Dwivedi compares kashmir Saivism with Sankara`s Vedanta and T.S.Rukmani compares Siddhis as found in the Bhagavata Purana and in Patanjali`s Yogasutras. R.V. Joshi compares the Advaita and the Vaisnava views of the matter.

The field of non-Tantric Buddhism still has many problems and debated issues. The present volumes included numerous solutions of these problems by the senior author Alex Wayman. The categories of the Twenty-four essays are Heroes of the system, Theory of the Heroes, Buddhist Doctrine, Buddhist Practice and hindu Buddhist Studies.
