Imagine a large, battered old leather folder stuffed full of sheets of paper of various sizes and thicknesses - on the front, "Stories of the Witches of Old Allbyon" in curly letters, underneath there is a face. The hair and beard are made of leaves. Leaves are growing out of its mouth, and nostrils. Inside the folder, the stories - some written in round loopy handwriting on thick paper with wobbly edges. Some had been typed on a mechanical typewriter. Others were printouts from dot matrix printers, and some from more recent computer printers. All these stories were read to me when I was young. I didn't know it then, but the roots of everything that happened to us are in these stories, as the events in "The Last Wizard", grew out of what happened in "The Last Witch" - Maybe all stories begin in other stories. Who I am - who we are - I will leave for now. For now, we start with some of the tales of Old Allbyon.

Founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Pepper, the art director of Gourmet magazine for many years, The Witches' Almanac is a witty, literate, and sophisticated publication that appeals to general readers as well as hard-core Wiccans. At one level, it is a pop reference that will fascinate anyone interested in folklore, mythology, and culture, but at another, it is the most sophisticated and wide-ranging annual guide for the Wiccan enthusiast. Modeled after the Old Farmers’ Almanac, it includes information related to the annual Moon Calendar (weather forecasts and horoscopes), as well as legends, rituals, herbal secrets, interviews, mystic incantations, interviews, and many a curious tale of good and evil. Although it is an annual publication, only about 15 percent of the content is specific to the date range of each issue. The theme of Issue 34 (Spring 2015—Spring 2016) is Fire the Transformer, and among our lineup of obscurities is the Krampus, a Wassail recipe, Botanicas, the Restless Dead, Rum, and the Tibetan Dorje.

They will have justice. They will show their power. They will not burn. 'Three women's fight for survival in a time of madness' Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies Norway, 1662. A dangerous time to be a woman, when even dancing can lead to accusations of witchcraft. After recently widowed Zigri's affair with the local merchant is discovered, she is sent to the fortress at Vardø to be tried as a witch. Zigri's daughter Ingeborg sets off into the wilderness to try to bring her mother back home. Accompanying her on this quest is Maren - herself the daughter of a witch - whose wild nature and unconquerable spirit gives Ingeborg the courage to venture into the unknown, and to risk all she has to save her family. Also captive in the fortress is Anna Rhodius, once the King of Denmark's mistress, who has been sent in disgrace to the island of Vardø. What will she do - and who will she betray - to return to her privileged life at court? These Witches of Vardø are stronger than even the King. In an age weighted against them, they refuse to be victims. They will have their justice. All they need do is show their power. 'An intricately woven, timeless novel about prejudice, misogyny, freedom and the power and strength we can find within' - Christy Lefteri, author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo 'A passionate indictment of the patriarchy ... a vibrant exaltation of the resilience of women ... Anya Bergman summons a historic witch trial with breathtaking detail and immediacy' Hannah Kent, author of Burial Rites 'Brilliant and powerful. Haunting and beautifully written. A complex and gripping novel reclaiming and retelling the stories of the women accused of witchcraft in Norway. Hugely atmospheric. Read it!' - Liz Hyder, author of The Gifts

The conclusion to the A Month of Magic trilogy. December is Clemmie Merlyn’s favourite month as it usually begins with birthday cake and gifts. But as she turns thirteen, it begins with a bang: Clemmie, and Clemmie alone amongst all witches, is full of magic. So full of magic she might not make it to the end of the month. As the snow spirals down, anxious Clemmie and the young hags will have to find some way to stop her exploding. Because someone, or something, has chosen Clemmie and made her their One True Witch. But magic is meant to be shared and no-one can survive being filled to the brim with starry power. Can the Merlyn and Morgan covens finally take on the ancient twisted magic of their ancestors? And can they do it in time for Christmas? Praise for A Month of Magic: "This explores big, complicated feelings about identity and finding your place in the world, and is packed full of cosy seasonal details!" – Anna James "A fresh take on witches...that is sure to leave readers spellbound" - Katie Tsang "There’s real magic in this story, the magic of transformation and enchantment and extraordinary events, but also the magic of family and family relationships. Claessen conjures up both sorts with equal dexterity and readers will relish being in her world." - Andrea Reece, Love Reading

On 19 April 1621, a woman named Elizabeth Sawyer was hanged at Tyburn. Her story was on the bookstalls within days and within weeks was adapted for the stage as The Witch of Edmonton. The devil stalks Edmonton in the shape of a large black dog and, just as Elizabeth Sawyer makes her demonic pact, the newlywed Frank Thorney enters into his own dark bargain in the shape of a second, bigamous marriage. Torn between sympathy for Sawyer and Thorney and a clear-eyed assessment of their crimes, the play was the finest and most nuanced treatment of witchcraft that the stage would see for centuries. Lucy Munro's introduction provides students and scholars with a detailed understanding of this complex play.
