Synopsis The Ultimate Riyaaz Book by : Keith Villanueva

This is essentially a classical Indian music practice manual. It uses sargam ( Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) for musical notation. In northern classical Indian music you can make numerous sequences of these notes. In northern classical Indian instrumental music musical patterns that are used for exercises are called "paltas," where as in the vocal category of Indian classical music these patterns are called "alankars." There are over 650 patterns in this book. These patterns are used as exercises in order to develop one's pitch accuracy, tone, dexterity, agility, flexibility, and speed. These exercises also help train your ear. Training your ear helps you recognized patterns, notes, thaats, ragas, and scales. This book will bring your practice to the next level and make you an improvisation wizard. There is a brief introduction on what sargam notes are and the 10 thaats. The 10 thaats are the 10 major modes within northern Indian classical music. This book uses 2 and 3 notes in order to make 3, 4, 5, and 6 note pattern phrases that go up and down a complete scale . This is a must for jazz musicians

Synopsis The Book on Raga Yaman & Tals by : Keith Villanueva

Raga Yaman is known to be the first raga taught to students of Indian classical music. This is why I choose to make a book that is on this specific raga. The masters that teach feel that the knowledge of raga Yaman will help one understand all the other ragas. This is a book that is focused on raga Yaman and includes most of the tals of Indian classical music that pertains to Khayal, Dhrupad, and light music. This book's main focus is showing one how to practice correctly with a raga. All the important aspects of Yaman are expressed and shared within this book. All the alankars / paltas / sargam exercises, songs, and merukhand are written for raga Yaman only. To practice correctly, one must practice with a rhythm cycle (taal). Indian classical music in it's entirety is the expression of raga & tala together. This is why the importance of tals are taught and shared within this book. This book is for the vocalists and instrumentalist of the string and wind categories. All my other books are thaat based. Renowned for playing Monterey Pop, Woodstock, and the Concert for Bangladesh-and for teaching George Harrison of The Beatles how to play the sitar-Shankar reshaped the musical landscape of the 1960s across pop, jazz, and classical music, and composed unforgettable scores for movies like Pather Panchali and Gandhi. Synopsis Dispatches from Pakistan by : Madiha R. Tahir

Since 9/11, Pakistan has loomed large in the geopolitical imagination of the West. A key ally in the global war on terror, it is also the country in which Osama bin Laden was finally found and killed—and the one that has borne the brunt of much of the ongoing conflict’s collateral damage. Despite its prominence on the front lines and on the front pages, Pakistan has been depicted by Western observers simplistically in terms of its corruption, its fundamentalist Islamic beliefs, and its propensity for violence. Dispatches from Pakistan, in contrast, reveals the complexities, the challenges, and the joys of daily life in the country, from the poetry of Gilgit to the graffiti of Gwadar, from an army barrack in Punjab to the urban politics of Karachi. This timely book brings together journalists, activists, academics, and artists to provide a rich, in-depth, and intriguing portrait of contemporary Pakistani society. Straddling a variety of boundaries—geographic, linguistic, and narrative—Dispatches from Pakistan is a vital attempt to speak for the multitude of Pakistanis who, in the face of seemingly unimaginable hardships, from drone strikes to crushing poverty, remain defiantly optimistic about their future. While engaging in conversations on issues that make the headlines in the West, the contributors also introduce less familiar dimensions of Pakistani life, highlighting the voices of urban poets, rural laborers, industrial workers, and religious-feminist activists—and recovering Pakistani society’s inquilabi (revolutionary) undercurrents and its hopeful overtones. This book is for all artists, connoisseurs, students, and lovers of music, especially Indian Classical Music. Merukhand (literally, mountain part) is a compilation of the permutations of Indian musical notes (Svara). These permutations serve as parts that help to create a mountain of music. Rajen Jani introduces a new term "Saptasvaro'ashtakramah" or the "Saptaka Svara Ashtaka Krama" in Indian Classical Music, to denote an octave format of the seven Svara. This book is presented in two volumes, which together have a total of 122,498 Svara permutations. Volume 1 contains 53,218 permutations. Volume 2 contains 69,280 permutations. Respective to the volumes, the permutations are without any exact repetition.
