Synopsis Ways of Voice by : Matthew Rahaim

Ways of Voice explores techniques of voice production in North India, from Bollywood to raga music to ghazal to devotional hymns and Sufi song. The voices in play here are not merely given, but achieved. Singers consciously train themselves to cultivate characteristic vocal gaits, sonorities, and poetic attunements; they adopt postures of the vocal apparatus; they build habits of listening, temporality, and social relations. The action in Ways of Voice revolves around several dozen North Indian popular, devotional, classical, and folk singers engaged in projects of vocal striving. Like most singers, they are strategically working on changing, refining, and making their own voices. The book thus highlights the ways in which singers not only "have" voice, but actively acquire, cultivate and contest particular vocal dispositions for particular kinds of listeners. In framing a "Hindustani vocal ecumene" that encompasses a diverse range of classical, popular, and spiritual-devotional musical styles and practices, it offers an expansive look at ways of voice that extend far beyond commonsense boundaries of genre and place. A rich archive of audio and video examples are provided on the online companion site, which can be found at https://www.weslpress.org/readers-companions/.

Synopsis The Penguin Dictionary of Indian Classical Music by : Raghava R. Menon

A unique reference book on music incorporating terms and references from both the traditions in Indian classical musicýthe Carnatic and the Hindustani. The Penguin Book of Indian Classical Music, the first of its kind, provides definitions of musical terms and descriptions of the traditions and styles that constitute the rich musical heritage of India. From the primary enunciation of a raga as ýaaý, the unstructured, emotionally inspired musical rendering, to the Urdu term ýzamzamaý that refers to the back and forth movement of a note, the dictionary defines the A to Z in Indian classical music. Comparison between the two systems in terms of ragas and the use of notes is facilitated by cross-references. And Raghava Menonýs introduction provides a perceptive insight into what constitutes Indian classical music, both in emotive and technical terms. Complete with photographs of the major instruments used in the two traditions as well as those of some of the all-time great musicians in Indian classical music, the volume is intended to be a valuable reference book for the virtuoso and the lay person aspiring for a greater understanding of Indian music.

Synopsis Enlightening the Listener by : Prabhā Atre

Illustrations: With an Audio Cd Description: The writings on Indian music have been mostly on theoretical aspects and mainly by theoreticians and not by practising musicians. It is still rare to find a woman performer who has written on music performance from different angles. In Enlightening the Listener, Prabha Atre, a noted vocalist examines with a liberal and holistic approach various aspects of a contemporary North Indian classical vocal music performance for a lay listener. While doing this she critically and objectively tries to seek in the context of changing times new meaning appropriate to what has come down from tradition. Her academic background, analytical mind, logical approach and communication skills put this book in a special category. This book deals with various aspects of music performance as also persons and institutions involved in 'Music making'. Dr. Atre's diverse experience as a singer, composer, teacher and thinker has lent authenticity to this work. From a point of view of a lay listener, she unfolds artistically the creative process of music making and thus gently guides the reader towards better appreciation. The accompanying cassette with illustrations is an added feature of this book. Listening to it will help the reader to identify the musical material and forms and gives an idea of the techniques involved.
