Synopsis The Ghost in the Curve by : Violet Howe
Sloane Reid has never believed in ghosts, even though she made a career out of playing a ghost slayer on film. When the studio tells her at twenty-nine she’s too old to be a scream queen, Sloane retreats to her aunt’s remote Florida cabin to figure out what comes next. Her trip is anything but relaxing when she encounters Chelsea, a young girl who died near the cabin thirteen years ago. Chelsea is desperate for Sloane’s help to reveal the truth that haunts her, but Sloane can’t solve the mystery alone. She needs to ask for help from local deputy Tristan Rogers, which means she’ll have to convince him she’s not crazy. Or a criminal. As Sloane and Tristan unlock the secrets of the past, the stakes grow higher for them both, and soon Sloane finds it may be her own life that needs saving.

Synopsis Spectrometric Techniques by : George A. Vanasse
Spectrometric Techniques, Volume II provides information pertinent to vacuum ultraviolet techniques to complete the demonstration of the diversity of methods available to the spectroscopist interested in the ultraviolet visible and infrared spectral regions. This book discusses the specific aspects of the technique of Fourier transform spectroscopy. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the large number of systematic effects in the recording of an interferogram. This text then examines the design approach for a Fourier transform spectrometer with focus on optics. Other chapters provide a brief background to outline the scientific usefulness of Fourier spectrometers and present a calculation giving the optical path difference required to solve a Doppler-broadened spectral feature. This book discusses as well the importance of good mechanical design to minimize sampling error contributions by mechanical mechanisms and resonances. The final chapter deals with photon counting techniques to measure dispersed radiation. This book is a valuable resource for spectroscopists.

Synopsis Tales of Kentucky Ghosts by : William Lynwood Montell
“Vividly re-creates the context of storytelling in Kentucky in times past.” —Margaret Read MacDonald, author of Ten Traditional Tellers A good ghost story can make your hair stand on end, your palms sweat, and your heart race. The bone-chilling collection Tales of Kentucky Ghosts presents more than 250 stories that do just that. William Lynwood Montell has assembled an entertaining and diverse array of tales from across the commonwealth that will keep you checking under the bed every night. The first-person accounts in this collection showcase folklore that Montell has drawn from archives, family stories, and oral traditions throughout Kentucky. The stories include that of the ghost bride of Laurel County, who appears each year on the anniversary of her wedding day; the tale of the murdered worker who haunts the Simpson County home of his killer and former employer; the account of the lost mandolin that plays itself in a house in Graves County, and many more. Tales of Kentucky Ghosts brings together a variety of terrifying narratives that not only entertain and frighten but also serve as a unique record of Kentucky’s rich heritage of storytelling. “Lynwood Montell is truly an icon in the field of Kentucky folklore.” —James McCormick and Macy A. Wyatt, authors of Ghosts of the Bluegrass “Lynwood Montell successfully reports on family stories, bizarre creatures, urban legends, classic country ghost tales, strange glowing lights, talking cats and so much more.” —Thomas Freese, author of Ghosts, Spirits, and Angels: True Tales from Kentucky and Beyond “Sure to both entertain and chill its readers while also allowing them to consider their own supernatural heritage.” —Manchester Enterprise

Synopsis The Glow in the Woods by : Violet Howe
Sloane Reid has dealt with the spotlight of movie stardom since she was sixteen, but now that she’s settled down between films in the small town of Cedar Creek, fame has become a liability. She wants to complete an apprenticeship to do PI work, but it’s not easy to operate undercover when fans scream your name and ask for autographs. So far, she’s been able to keep her romance with the local deputy under wraps, but as her star rises with the buzz around her latest film, so does the risk of having their relationship become front page news. Rachel Graves knows she can’t afford to keep her late husband’s family farm, but she’s certain that what she’s seeing in the woods behind her house is a sign from Vincent telling her not to sell it. She confides in her brother, the only person who won’t think she’s crazy or just seeing things. He suggests she talk to the Hollywood actress in town who’s working on becoming a PI and is rumored to be able to talk to ghosts. It seems like a win-win situation—Sloane gets a client who doesn’t care if she’s famous, and Rachel can confide in someone who won’t think she’s lost her mind. But as secrets begin to unravel around both Rachel and Sloane, they stand to lose more than Rachel’s farm and Sloane’s romance. Will they have to risk their lives to discover the truth about The Glow in the Woods? The second volume in The Cedar Creek Series brings back the small-town romance and fun, paranormal twist of The Ghost in the Curve, but with even more suspense and a whole new mystery!

Synopsis Vertex Operators in Mathematics and Physics by : J. Lepowsky
James Lepowsky t The search for symmetry in nature has for a long time provided representation theory with perhaps its chief motivation. According to the standard approach of Lie theory, one looks for infinitesimal symmetry -- Lie algebras of operators or concrete realizations of abstract Lie algebras. A central theme in this volume is the construction of affine Lie algebras using formal differential operators called vertex operators, which originally appeared in the dual-string theory. Since the precise description of vertex operators, in both mathematical and physical settings, requires a fair amount of notation, we do not attempt it in this introduction. Instead we refer the reader to the papers of Mandelstam, Goddard-Olive, Lepowsky-Wilson and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman. We have tried to maintain consistency of terminology and to some extent notation in the articles herein. To help the reader we shall review some of the terminology. We also thought it might be useful to supplement an earlier fairly detailed exposition of ours [37] with a brief historical account of vertex operators in mathematics and their connection with affine algebras. Since we were involved in the development of the subject, the reader should be advised that what follows reflects our own understanding. For another view, see [29].1 t Partially supported by the National Science Foundation through the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and NSF Grant MCS 83-01664. 1 We would like to thank Igor Frenkel for his valuable comments on the first draft of this introduction.
