Synopsis The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Julian Stafford Corbett

Excerpt from The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 2 of 2 Ever since Napoleon had realised with reluctant con viction that to pass his army across the Channel by stealth or its own force was impossible, he had been exhausting his strategical ingenuity to secure the temporary command. He had run the gamut of every device his predecessors had ever tried. No trick or compelling movement had been neglected to dissipate the force that barred his way. Synopsis The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 1 of 2 by : Julian S. Corbett

Excerpt from The Campaign of Trafalgar, Vol. 1 of 2: With Crafts and Diagrams Of these charts, which have now been constructed for the first time, and which are the necessary basis of all strategical criticism, it must be explained that they should not be taken as absolutely correct. Except where otherwise indicated the tracks are simply plotted between noon positions, and owing to the uncertainty of longitude observations, even these posi tions are sometimes only approximate. This is especially the case with the smaller cruisers, whose neglected movements are not infrequently vital to a correct view of fleet operations, such as Orde's retreat from Cadiz and Nelson's final decision to chase to the West Indies. In the important case, for instance, of the Iris, which observed Villeneuve's final movement from Ferrol, no one on board seems to have been able to work out a longitude at all. At least none are entered in her master's log, and m running down from Ushant she made Cape Pefias instead of Ortegal, nearly a hundred miles to the westward. Synopsis The Battle of Trafalgar (Classic Reprint) by : Philip Howard Colomb

Excerpt from The Battle of Trafalgar Now, when the numbers came to be 27 to 33, instead of the 40 to 46 that Nelson had supposed, a very fair carrying out of his principle would have divided the enemy's fleet into three parts of I I ships each, so the 14 ships should take one I I, I 3 ships another I 1, while the third I I in the van should be let go free. There would have been no sense in putting a lee division of (say) 14 ships on to 16 or I 7 of the enemy's the weather division of (say) 13 ships on to 4 or 5 of the enemy's, while a van 'of 12 or 13 ships should have been let go free. Synopsis The Navy "at Home", Vol. 2 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by :

Excerpt from The Navy "at Home," Vol. 2 of 3 BY day ght the next morning, the ships had considerably neared each other, and the stranger was made out clearly to be a man of war, by the cut of the sails; though as yet the hull was not visible from any of the tops even, and shortly after, a light wind springing up, the vessels closed fast, (both bent apparently on the same thing), to the great joy of all on board for, if a friend, they would at least have some news; if an enemy, (as she was made out to be only a large frigate), so much the better: private signals were soon after exchanged, which settled the question - she was a friend!
