Synopsis The Blood of the Arab by : Albert W. Harris
“IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES the author deals with an exceedingly interesting subject in a most agreeable and instructive manner. His long experience with Arab horses in the East, in the West, on the ranch, in the park, and on Endurance Rides, fits him to speak with authority. I was one of the judges of the first Endurance Ride, conducted under rigid rules and active supervision, in this country, Mr. Harris rode an Arabian mare in this difficult contest, sixty miles per day, for five successive days, with two hundred pounds up, and brought her in in fine shape, to win first place. In addition to being a fine horseman and horsemaster, he is a renowned breeder of Arabian horses. “If one were in quest of accurate and complete information, historical or practical, about the Arab horse—data which would not glorify the Arab at the expense of fact, I should unhesitatingly refer him to the author. He owned the best Arab sire I have ever seen, whether in this country, Europe, or Asia. “He has a large stud farm of pure-bred Arabs. He also used his sires on mares of other breeding, or no breeding, with excellent results. “Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not, I know of no one better fitted to write of the merits and accomplishments of the Arab horse, without indulging in befogging breed-enthusiasm, than the author.”

Synopsis Kinship and Beyond by : Sandra Bamford
The genealogical model has a long-standing history in Western thought. The contributors to this volume consider the ways in which assumptions about the genealogical model--in particular, ideas concerning sequence, essence, and transmission--structure other modes of practice and knowledge-making in domains well beyond what is normally labeled "kinship." The detailed ethnographic work and analysis included in this text explores how these assumptions have been built into our understandings of race, personhood, ethnicity, property relations, and the relationship between human beings and non-human species. The authors explore the influences of the genealogical model of kinship in wider social theory and examine anthropology's ability to provide a unique framework capable of bridging the "social" and "natural" sciences. In doing so, this volume brings fresh new perspectives to bear on contemporary theories concerning biotechnology and its effect upon social life.

Synopsis Skeeter's Dreams by : Heidrun Metzler
Skeeter, the most charming and amazing Arabian horse, a trick horse in real life, dreams big. With her engaging personality she takes children on an imaginative quest, exploring her many other talents. Her message to children resonates in this book. "Never give up on your dreams!" Skeeter, an Arabian trick horse, gallops toward dreams and adventures. She envisions success in more exciting and certainly less-traditional career possibilities than her current role. "I am a trick horse and could do so much more," Skeeter laments. "As long as I have dreams, who knows how high I can soar?" And soar she does. Readers travel with the stunning white horse as she transforms into a theatrical actress with a bouquet of roses between her teeth, a painter who stands beside a canvas showcasing the beautiful vista that surrounds her, a funky-hat-wearing musician bedecked with a guitar around her neck, and more. Young readers will smile as they explore her antics. If a horse can be a mountain guide who spots and belays rock climbers, why can't they? Excerpt from Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis Arab Awakening and Islamic Revival by : Martin Kramer
Over the past decade, the political ground beneath the Middle East has shifted. Arab nationalism the political orthodoxy for most of this century has lost its grip on the imagination and allegiance of a new generation. At the same time, Islam as an ideology has spread across the region, and "Islamists" bid to capture the center of politics. Most Western scholars and experts once hailed the redemptive power of Arabism. Arab Awakening and Islamic Revival is a critical assessment of the contradictions of Arab nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism, and the misrepresentation of both in the West. The first part of the book argues that Arab nationalism--the so-called Arab awakening--bore within it the seeds of its own failure. Arabism as an idea drew upon foreign sources and resources. Even as it claimed to liberate the Arabs from imperialism it deepened intellectual dependence upon the West's own romanticism and radicalism. Ultimately, Arab nationalism became a force of oppression rather than liberation, and a mirror image of the imperialism it defied. Kramer's essays together form the only chronological telling and the at fully documented postmortem of Arabism. The second part of the book examines the similar failings of Islamism, whose ideas are Islamic reworkings of Western ideological radicalism. Its effect has been to give new life to old rationales for oppression, authoritarianism, and sectarian division.Arab Awakening and Islamic Revival provides an alternative view of a century of Middle Eastern history. As the region moves fitfully past ideology, Kramer's perspective is more compelling than at any time in the past-in Western academe no less than among many in the Middle. This book will be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, economists, and Middle East specialists.
