Synopsis The Immigrant Exodus by : Vivek Wadhwa
A 2012 ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR Many of the United States' most innovative entrepreneurs have been immigrants, from Andrew Carnegie, Alexander Graham Bell, and Charles Pfizer to Sergey Brin, Vinod Khosla, and Elon Musk. Nearly half of Fortune 500 companies and one-quarter of all new small businesses were founded by immigrants, generating trillions of dollars annually, employing millions of workers, and helping establish the United States as the most entrepreneurial, technologically advanced society on earth. Now, Vivek Wadhwa, an immigrant tech entrepreneur turned academic with appointments at Duke, Stanford, Emory, and Singularity Universities, draws on his new Kauffman Foundation research to show that the United States is in the midst of an unprecedented halt in high-growth, immigrant-founded start-ups. He argues that increased competition from countries like China and India and US immigration policies are leaving some of the most educated and talented entrepreneurial immigrants with no choice but to take their innovation elsewhere. The consequences to our economy are dire; our multi-trillion dollar loss will be the gain of our global competitors. With his signature fearlessness and clarity, Wadhwa offers a concise framework for understanding the Immigrant Exodus and offers a recipe for reversal and rapid recovery.

Synopsis Becoming an Effective Mentoring Leader: Proven Strategies for Building Excellence in Your Organization by : William J. Rothwell
Turn mentoring into PROFITS There’s no doubt that the concept of workplace mentoring is a hot-button issue facing management today. With managers under extraordinary pressure to cut costs, streamline operations, and increase productivity, the role of mentors has become more critical than ever—particularly since studies show leaders who mentor get promoted faster and earn significantly more than those who don’t. But as with any growing workplace trend, questions remain about how to utilize mentoring so you get tangible and profitable results. This book, from two of the world’s foremost experts on business learning and employee development, answers those questions. Becoming an Effective Mentoring Leader breaks down the essentials of mentoring, and shows you how to take advantage of this valuable new workplace dynamic. You’ll learn: • The smartest way to incorporate mentoring into your day-to-day leadership role • The fastest way to equip, inspire, and motivate your staff • The differences between mentoring, coaching, and teaching • How you as a leader can rate the mentors in your office – and assess the progress of mentees Using case studies, tools, and impactful learning concepts, the authors show you how to use mentoring’s “core skills” to create a winning approach tailored to your own style, be it the “reflective mentor,” the “storytelling mentor,” or “the example-based mentor.” The book also features several appendices and FAQs, handouts, and worksheets to gauge competencies among mentors and mentees, and a blueprint with steps to set up one’s own companywide program. As today’s biggest industry leaders continue to recognize the profound effect mentoring has on performance and profitability, there’s never been a better time to put this book’s essential tools to work for you.

Synopsis Sidney Poitier by : Aram Goudsouzian
In the first full biography of actor Sidney Poitier, Aram Goudsouzian analyzes the life and career of a Hollywood legend, from his childhood in the Bahamas to his 2002 Oscar for lifetime achievement. Poitier is a gifted actor, a great American success story, an intriguing personality, and a political symbol; his life and career illuminate America's racial history. In such films as Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Poitier's middle-class, mannered, virtuous screen persona contradicted prevailing film stereotypes of blacks as half-wits, comic servants, or oversexed threats. His screen image and public support of nonviolent integration assuaged the fears of a broad political center, and by 1968, Poitier was voted America's favorite movie star. Through careful readings of every Poitier film, Goudsouzian shows that Poitier's characters often made sacrifices for the good of whites and rarely displayed sexuality. As the only black leading man during the civil rights era, Poitier chose roles and public positions that negotiated the struggle for dignity. By 1970, times had changed and Poitier was the target of a backlash from film critics and black radicals, as the new heroes of "blaxploitation" movies reversed the Poitier model. In the 1970s, Poitier shifted his considerable talents toward directing, starring in, and producing popular movies that employed many African Americans, both on and off screen. After a long hiatus, he returned to starring roles in the late 1980s. More recently, the film industry has reappraised his career, and Poitier has received numerous honors recognizing his multi-faceted work for black equality in Hollywood. As this biography affirms, Poitier remains one of American popular culture's foremost symbols of the possibilities for and limits of racial equality.

Synopsis Strategic Staffing by : Jean Phillips
Formerly published by Chicago Business Press, now published by Sage Strategic Staffing, 4e prepares all current and future managers to take a strategic and modern approach to the identification, attraction, selection, deployment, and retention of talent. Organizations increasingly realize that their employees are the key to executing their business strategies, and the current competition for talent has made the identification and attraction of high-performing employees essential for companies to succeed in their marketplaces. The right employees give their organization a competitive advantage that sets it apart and drives its performance. In today’s business environment, a company’s ability to execute its strategy and maintain its competitive edge depends even more on the quality of its employees. And the quality of a company’s employees is directly affected by the quality of its recruiting and staffing systems. Because hiring managers are involved in the staffing process, hiring managers and human resources (HR) professionals need to be familiar with strategic staffing techniques. Over the past 10 years, advancing technology and the increased application of data analytics have changed the practices of sourcing, recruiting, and staffing. Strategic Staffing 4e is grounded in research, communicates practical and modern staffing concepts and the role of staffing in organizational performance, and is engaging to read. The new edition contains updates to many sections on the roles of technology and analytics and adds more focus to the discussion of ethics that was added to the fourth edition. New research findings were also incorporated, and many company examples were updated. The fifth edition of Strategic Staffing continues to present up-to-date staffing theories and practices in an interesting, engaging, and easy-to-read format.
