This handbook presents cutting-edge and global insights on sustainable heritage, engaging with ideas such as data science in heritage, climate change and environmental challenges, indigenous heritage, contested heritage and resilience. This collection deals with the impacts of climate change, focusing on urban regions and heritage-related scenarios. It assesses the effects of climate change on our cultural and natural heritage, disaster management, adaptation to climate change, and sustainability in building and urban planning. Climate change concerns our cultural and natural heritage, so it is crucial that we address this issue with regard to all of its social, physical and cultural consequences. In 2015, the General Assembly of State Parties to the World Heritage Convention passed a ground-breaking Sustainable Development policy that seeks to bring the World Heritage system into line with the UN’s sustainable development agenda (UNESCO 2015). World Heritage and Sustainable Development provides a broad overview of the process that brought about the new policy and the implications of its enactment. The book is divided into four parts. Part I puts the policy in its historical and theoretical context, and Part II offers an analysis of the four policy dimensions on which the policy is based – environmental sustainability, inclusive social development, inclusive economic development and the fostering of peace and security. This book provides a systemic understanding of how intangible cultural heritage (ICH) can promote sustainable development. It offers new insights on the identity-building potential of heritage practices as ‘enabler’ of development and their capacity to generate social and economic profits as ‘driver’ of development. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s ‘Theory of Practice’, a model for the valorisation of ICH is presented, which may serve as a tool to stimulate the developmental potentials of heritage on a practical level. The functioning of the valorisation model is exemplified with a case study on a German choral tradition, which has not been officially nominated as ICH. Therewith, it is shown how the model can be applied to utilise the developmental potentials of ICH - as promoted in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) – even beyond UNESCO’s scope. Heritage and Sustainable Urban Transformations introduces the concept of ‘deep cities’, a novel approach to the understanding and management of sustainable historic cities that will advance knowledge about how the long-term, temporal and transformative character of urban heritage can be better integrated into urban policies for sustainable futures. Contrary to the growing emphasis on green or smart cities, which focus only on the present and future, the concept of ‘deep cities’ offers an approach that combines an in-depth understanding of the past with the present and future. Bringing together chapters that cover theoretical, methodological and management issues related to ‘deep cities’, the volume argues that using this approach will force researchers, managers and consultants to actively use the heritage and history of a city in the planning and management of sustainable cities. Exploring different definitions of ‘deep cities’, the book reveals varying and sometimes conflicting views among stakeholders concerning how, where and when the depth of a city should be conceptualized. This book proposes that sustainable marketing should be founded on a higher level of consciousness, governed by the Eastern ethical principles of dharma and karma. It suggests a socially responsible, integrated marketing strategy to boost transformational heritage tourism. The book puts forward a framework to promote and inspire transformative heritage tourism from a sustainable marketing perspective. Drawing on examples from different parts of the world such as Thailand, China, the USA, India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Hong Kong, it takes a unique approach by integrating elements associated with distributive justice, procedural justice, morally motivated existentialist authentic experiences and the well-being of visited and visiting environments. The book pivots on the planning and marketing of heritage of communities such as local, descendent and indigenous across eight broad themes: (1) promotion and sustainable branding of heritage tourism; (2) empowerment of indigenous communities; (3) authenticity and conservation of heritage; (4) safeguarding of art, culture and cultural landscapes; (5) economic viability for the host communities; (6) interpretation and resolution of dissonant heritage representations; (7) stimulating audience engagement and co-created mindful spaces and; (8) facilitating moral consciousness and stimulating lasting inner transformation in guests and hosts. Scholars can replicate and/or test the proposed guided sustainable marketing model, referred to as the transformative heritage tourism pathway, which is adapted from a) the needs, activities and well-being sequential path of transformation and, b) the socially responsible sustainable marketing doctrine guided by the principles of 'dharma' and 'karma'. This book is unique as it stresses eudaimonia as the ultimate goal of well-being and argues that its pursuit can steer the sustained transformation route toward a higher sense of consciousness and responsible production and consumption of heritage resources. La rigenerazione urbana si basa su una visione integrata volta a risolvere i problemi urbani e a promuovere lo sviluppo delle comunità interessate. Reiventare lo spazio, valorizzare la cultura per dare nuova vita ai centri storici, è un’esigenza civica crescente e una sfida per i politici e i manager delle città. Questo obiettivo potrebbe essere raggiunto valorizzando il Patrimonio Culturale e i saperi locali per generare nuove opportunità e benessere per i cittadini. Al momento, troppo spesso il Patrimonio Culturale viene apprezzato principalmente a fini turistici. Un fatto che causa anche molteplici problemi: sovraffollamento, gentrificazione, conflitti tra interessi turistici e civici, traffico urbano, generazione di posti di lavoro a basso reddito, per citare solo i più evidenti. Ne deriva che una profonda comprensione della partecipazione civica e democratica nell'accesso, nella conservazione e nello sfruttamento del nostro Patrimonio Culturale è un terreno fertile per il dibattito tra studiosi di varie discipline. The importance of cultural heritage - in both its tangible and intangible forms - to sustainable development and its economic, social and environmental components is increasingly evident in the recent practice of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations at the universal and regional level. Due consideration for the integration of the cultural dimension in the implementation of Agenda 2030 has begun to grow in various international fora, including initiatives to emphasize the role and contribution of tangible and intangible heritage as drivers and enablers of sustainable development. It has also been recognized that the inherent links between cultural heritage and sustainable development cannot be correctly addressed without taking into account their various implications for the effective enjoyment of all human rights, including cultural rights. This book offers a thorough academic investigation on the importance of cultural heritage to sustainable development and cultural rights from an international law perspective.
