Steppe Dreams concerns the political significance of temporality in Kazakhstan, as manifested in public events and performances, and its reverberating effects in the personal lives of Kazakhstanis. Like many holidays in the post-Soviet sphere, public celebrations in Kazakhstan often reflect multiple temporal framings—utopian visions of the future, or romanticized views of the past—which throw light on present-day politics of identity. Focusing on the region of today's Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, this book highlights the continuities in discourse and policies beyond the historical divide of 1917. One of the central topoi was the transformation of 'dead' lands into 'blossoming oases'. High modernism policies hit their peak in the post-war decades. From the 1970s, an ecological critique evolved which gained momentum in the Perestroika period. Ultimately, the grave ecological, economic and social consequences of the growth-fixated modernization contributed to the downfall of the Communist regime.

In the project, diverse educational programs are implemented for different target groups, including teachers, students, experts, and decision-makers responsible for the management of protected areas. An educational program was designed for students, including wall painting and drama activities with the artists, poetry and drawing competitions among schools, and a kite festival with the artists. Additionally, nature corners displaying the features of steppes were established in certain schools. As part of the education and awareness-raising program, an educational kit was prepared for teachers and students. This kit is a source document for increasing the knowledge, interest and awareness of children about the steppe ecosystems of Şanlıurfa.
