Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal is a hidden landmark, a valuable but latent asset to the local and broader community. It is designed as a series of public urban waterfront spaces that slow, absorb, and filter dirty surface water runoff to clean contaminated canal water, reduce combined sewer overflow, and activate the canal edge. Revealing the form, distribution, and size of natural ecological patterns in relation to the shape and patterns of infrastructure, neighborhoods, and political jurisdictions is another key component of the design. In the 19th century, Paris underwent profound transformations above and below ground, from the city center to its outskirts. As one of the worlds megacities, São Paulo has for decades seen an investment in architectural infrastructures that attempt to mitigate its open space shortages as well as fulfill the constant need for recreational, cultural, and sports programs. These buildings and open spaces - which can be public, semi-public, or privately-owned - arguably attempt to create inclusive places for urban society. This exhibition catalogue presents projects at different scales, focusing on their programmatic characteristics rather than the formal qualities usually emphasized in scholarship on Brazilian architecture. While many cities around the world are still chasing the so-called "Bilbao Effect" - the creation of a monofunctional "signature" architectural work by a famous architect that can attract tourism - this exhibition catalogue advocates for architectural infrastructure that adds programs of different natures, and that are aimed at social sustainability for local citizens. This aspect of urban growth in São Paulo - quite a vertical and densely-populated city; a city of great resources and also tremendous poverty; a city with high crime rates; a city with severe traffic issues; a city with public-health problems - illustrates how architecture and infrastructure can contribute to a city's urban development in multiple ways.

With the rapid development of Chinese urbanization in the 21st century, "urban diseases" become more serious, mainly manifested in water environmental pollution, urban flooding, water shortage, and deterioration of water ecology. It is necessary to establish a modern rainwater management system, scientifically solve the problem of excess urban rainwater and to improve water environment quality. Improvement of water environment quality is conducive to the ecological function of a sponge city. Sponge city construction has contributed to control non-point source pollution. Sponge systems cause the stagnation and purification of rainwater runoff, which is an important guarantee for water environment quality. This monograph summarizes theories and practices of the integrated water environment treatment in Chongqing, a typical representative mountainous city in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Based on the mountainous terrain and unique water environment characteristics in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, the monograph analyzes measures and difficulties in the basin water environment integrated treatment. Moreover, the monograph makes suggestions for risk management amid drainage systems during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Stan Allen is an architect and educator who has won global acclaim, primarily for his work in town planning and his influential 1996 essay "Field Conditions." Proof is the ninth in an annual series of publications that features the best young practicing architects as selected by the Architectural League of New York in their annual Young Architects competition.
