Synopsis Skin Aging and Photoaging by : Emanuel Graham
Skin aging is the result of two distinct, biological processes which may occur concurrently: extrinsic and intrinsic aging. The first chapter of this book focuses on the anti-skin aging effects of natural products, such as polyphenols and terpenes using topical application and oral administration. Future prospects for this field of research will focus on natural products combined with molecular techniques to help maximize the desired anti-skin aging benefits. The second chapter provides a brief review of skin characteristics, skin aging mechanisms and dermal applications. The next chapter of the book reviews the types of pollution and external aggression that skin is exposed to and reviews recently published studies that report that cumulative exposure to the five daily environmental aggressors (pollution, sun, cold, heat and wind) increase this skin damage. The remaining chapters review the role of inflammation in regulation of skin aging; the relevant methods, the physiological structure and function of the Stratum Corneum, as well as the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic aging on these parameters; the physiology of skin photoaging and the emerging therapies for combating photoaging and photocarcingenesis; and the biological effects and the latest findings on the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factors (MIF) in photoaging following UV exposure.

Synopsis Photoaging by : Darrell S. Rigel
The effects of UV exposure and aging are becoming an increasingly critical issue in clinical practice. Sun exposure and other sources of UV radiation play a major role in the early appearance of fine and coarse wrinkles, roughness, laxity, irregular pigmentation, and roughness of the skin. This clinical guide is the first of its kind to describe the vast array of treatment options available for the minimization and repair of the effects of photodamage-prompting clinicians to tailor therapeutic regimens to individual components of aging and balance the risks and benefits of each treatment against patient expectations.

Synopsis Cutaneous Photoaging by : Rachel E B Watson
Photoaging results from chronic exposure to UV radiation and is an increasingly common clinical feature, with an aging population the clinical burden is likely to increase despite advances in our understanding of the pathology and development of improved treatments. This book will present and review the latest progress from the forefront of translational research in cutaneous photoaging. The core chapters focus on the current understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of photoageing and lead on to aspects of photoprotection and photomedicine to provide a complete picture of the current field and a context for the importance of the basic mechanistic understanding. With a global team of authors Cutaneous Photoaging provides an international perspective on the causes, consequences, pathophysiology and treatment of photoaging, ideal for dermatologists, students and professionals in photoscience.

Synopsis Molecular Mechanisms of the Aging Process and Rejuvenation by : Naofumi Shiomi
Numerous studies had been performed to elucidate the mechanisms of aging and to achieve rejuvenation, with some success reported in recent years. However, at present, the findings from those studies are not sufficient to resolve the issue of aging. This book presents an overview of recent topics on cellular aging and rejuvenation. In the early chapters, the molecular mechanisms of aging via the activities of clock and ion channel proteins, in addition to overall aspects, are discussed. In the latter part, the aging of the skin, immune system, and brain is discussed. This book will prove useful for those studying or developing new drugs to counter the aging process and will encourage the development of novel ideas for rejuvenation.

Synopsis Challenges in Sun Protection by : Christian Surber
In the early 20th century, tanned skin was associated with good health. However, people began to protect themselves against potential overexposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. In the years to follow, a vast number of different sunscreen filters and frameworks regulating filter substances and preparations, and methods characterizing sunscreen products were developed. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times – initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues. Further papers address topics related to the use of sunscreen products in everyday life, in vulnerable cohorts and outdoor workers. Controversial topics such as environmental effects of sunscreen products and the risks and benefits of UV radiation in the context of skin cancer, vitamin D and cardiovascular and metabolic health are also covered.
