Synopsis Microbial Growth Kinetics by : N.S. Panikov

Microbial Growth Kinetics opens with a critical review of the history of microbial kinetics from the 19th century to the present day. The results of original investigations into the growth of soil microbes in both laboratory and natural environments are summarised. The book emphasises the analysis of complex dynamic behaviour of microorganism populations. Non-steady states and unbalanced growth, multiple limitation, survival under starvation, differentiation, morphological variability, colony and biofilm growth, mixed cultures and microbial population dynamics in soil are all examined. Mathematical models are proposed which give mechanistic explanations to many features of microbial growth. The book takes general kinetic principles and their ecological applications and presents them in a way specifically designed for the microbiologist. This in itself is unusual but taken with the book's fascinating historical overview and the many fresh and sometimes controversial ideas expressed, this book is a must for all advanced students of microbiology and researchers in microbial ecology and growth.

Synopsis Bioreaction Engineering Principles by : Jens Nielsen

This is the second edition of the text "Bioreaction Engineering Principles" by Jens Nielsen and John Villadsen, originally published in 1994 by Plenum Press (now part of Kluwer). Time runs fast in Biotechnology, and when Kluwer Plenum stopped reprinting the first edition and asked us to make a second, revised edition we happily accepted. A text on bioreactions written in the early 1990's will not reflect the enormous development of experimental as well as theoretical aspects of cellular reactions during the past decade. In the preface to the first edition we admitted to be newcomers in the field. One of us (JV) has had 10 more years of job training in biotechnology, and the younger author (IN) has now received international recognition for his work with the hottest topics of "modem" biotechnology. Furthermore we are happy to have induced Gunnar Liden, professor of chemical reaction engineering at our sister university in Lund, Sweden to join us as co-author of the second edition. His contribution, especially on the chemical engineering aspects of "real" bioreactors has been of the greatest value. Chapter 8 of the present edition is largely unchanged from the first edition. We wish to thank professor Martin Hjortso from LSU for his substantial help with this chapter.

Synopsis Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation of Activated Sludge Systems by : Jacek Makinia

Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation of Activated Sludge Systems – Second Edition provides, from the process engineering perspective, a comprehensive and up-to-date overview regarding various aspects of the mechanistic (“white box”) modelling and simulation of advanced activated sludge systems performing biological nutrient removal. In the new edition of the book, a special focus is given to nitrogen removal and the latest developments in modelling the innovative nitrogen removal processes. Furthermore, a new section on micropollutant removal has been added. The focus of modelling has been shifting in the last years to models that can describe the performance of a whole plant (plant-wide modelling). The expanded part of this new edition introduces models describing the most important processes interrelated with the mainstream activated sludge systems as well as models describing the energy balance, operating costs and environmental impact. The complex process evaluation, including minimization of energy consumption and carbon footprint, is in line with the present and future wastewater treatment goals. By combining a general introduction and a textbook, this book serves both intermediate and more experienced model users, both researchers and practitioners, as a comprehensive guide to modelling and simulation studies. The book can be used as a supplemental material at graduate and post-graduate levels of wastewater engineering/modelling courses.

Synopsis Computer Simulation by : Dragan Cvetković

The first chapter provides an overview of the development of a novel agent-based simulation model of socio-environmental innovation diffusion. The second chapter shows the study about rendering of colours with three rendering engines. The third and fourth chapters are devoted to modelling clothes at different levels. The fifth chapter describes the modelling of computer simulation in the optimization of bioprocess technology. Chapters 6 and 7 formulate a physical model of deformation of steel and idea of constructing a scientific workshop focused on high-temperature processes. Chapter 8 formulates surrogate models. Chapter 9 shows computer simulation of high-frequency electromagnetic fields. Chapter 10 proposes the modelling of the task allocation problem by the use of Petri Nets. Chapter 11 presents various scenarios whose ranking is done according to defined criteria and weight coefficients.

Synopsis Computer Simulation of Bioprocess by : Jianqun Lin

Bioprocess optimization is important in order to make the bioproduction process more efficient and economic. The conventional optimization methods are costly and less efficient. On the other hand, modeling and computer simulation can reveal the mechanisms behind the phenomenon to some extent, to assist the deep analysis and efficient optimization of bioprocesses. In this chapter, modeling and computer simulation of microbial growth and metabolism kinetics, bioreactor dynamics, bioreactor feedback control will be made to show the application methods and the usefulness of modeling and computer simulation methods in optimization of the bioprocess technology.

Synopsis Predictive Microbiology by : Thomas Alexander McMeekin

Four authors with backgrounds in food microbiology, food chemistry, mathematics, and statistics, explain how techniques of predictive microbiology can allow an objective evaluation of the effects of processing, distribution, and storage on the microbiological safety and quality of foods. The trick is to understand the microbial ecology of a process or of a food at a particular point in the chain, then use mathematical relationships between microbial growth and the expected environmental conditions, to predict the growth or survival of selected organisms. Synopsis Theory and Practice in Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery by : Kun Sang Lee

Selection of the optimal recovery method is significantly influenced by economic issues in today's oil and gas markets. Consequently, the development of cost-effective technologies, which bring maximum oil recovery, is the main interest in today's petroleum research communities. Theory and Practice in Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery provides the fundamentals, latest research and creditable field applications. Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) is potentially a low-priced and eco-friendly technique in which different microorganisms and their metabolic products are implemented to recover the remaining oil in the reservoir. Despite drastic advantages of MEOR technology, it is still not fully supported in the industry due to lack of knowledge on microbial activities and their complexity of the process. While some selected strategies have demonstrated the feasibility to be used on a mass scale through both lab and field trials, more research remains to implement MEOR into more oil industry practices. This reference delivers comprehensive descriptions on the fundamentals including basic theories on geomicrobiology, experiments and modeling, as well as current tested field applications. Theory and Practice in Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery gives engineers and researchers the tool needed to stay up to date on this evolving and more sustainable technology. - Covers fundamental screening criteria and theories selective plugging and mobility control mechanisms - Describes the basic effects on environmental parameters and the mechanics of simulation, including microbial growth kinetics - Applies up to date practical applications proven in both the lab and the field
