Synopsis Data Engineering by : Yupo Chan

DATA ENGINEERING: Mining, Information, and Intelligence describes applied research aimed at the task of collecting data and distilling useful information from that data. Most of the work presented emanates from research completed through collaborations between Acxiom Corporation and its academic research partners under the aegis of the Acxiom Laboratory for Applied Research (ALAR). Chapters are roughly ordered to follow the logical sequence of the transformation of data from raw input data streams to refined information. Four discrete sections cover Data Integration and Information Quality; Grid Computing; Data Mining; and Visualization. Additionally, there are exercises at the end of each chapter. The primary audience for this book is the broad base of anyone interested in data engineering, whether from academia, market research firms, or business-intelligence companies. The volume is ideally suited for researchers, practitioners, and postgraduate students alike. With its focus on problems arising from industry rather than a basic research perspective, combined with its intelligent organization, extensive references, and subject and author indices, it can serve the academic, research, and industrial audiences.

Synopsis ECKM2014-Proceedings of the 15th European conference on Knowledge Management by : Carla Vivas

The world economy in which we are living poses challenges that lead to a realization that 'more of the same' will be difficult to sustain. This provides an illustration that, in order to create new or modified knowledge practices, strengthen customer relationships and thus positively influence customer satisfaction, organizations must be flexible in configuring (combining) knowledge and knowledge structures in a way that is appropriate for delivering value to the customer. It must simultaneously develop effective strategies for updating the knowledge of its staff members necessary for underpinning the creation and delivery of appropriate knowledge services. Thus, unlearning (forgetting) becomes a critical means for organizational success. The ECKM community of scholars has already initiated dialogue that links its particular strengths to innovation issues. This conference aims to further that dialogue by attracting leading edge work that leverages the ECKM community's in-depth understanding of learning and unlearning to better understand knowledge management. Our aim is to stimulate breakthrough research streams linking learning, unlearning and knowledge management. How can organizations tailor, use, and extend techniques and tools from knowledge management for improving their business practices and processes? Building upon existing work on knowledge management (KM) and organizational learning, the conference will promote interdisciplinary approaches from computer science and information systems, business, management and organization science as well as cognitive science. Emphasis will be put on systematic learning from experience, KM tools and KM success factors. A special interest belongs to knowledge management initiatives which are lightweight (i.e., do not place considerable additional burden on users and KM experts), allow an incremental adoption (i.e., do not require large up-front investment before any return of investment is at least visible), and are flexible regarding frequent changes in experts and topics. Continuing the success of the ECKM conference series since 2000, the 2015 conference will provide an international communication forum bringing together academia and industry for discussing the progress made and addressing the challenges faced by continuous learning in knowledge-intensive organizations.

Synopsis Architecture of Interoperable Information Systems by : Jörg Ziemann

The automation of cross-organizational business processes is one of the most important trends of the information age. Instead of a tight integration however, collaborating organizations rather strive for a loose coupling of their information systems. Supporting this objective, the Architecture of Interoperable Information Systems (AIOS) represents a means for the comprehensive description of loosely coupled, interoperating information systems and for the systematic, model-based enactment of collaborative business processes. To this aim, it combines concepts from the areas of enterprise modeling, collaborative business and Service-oriented Computing. At the core of the architecture lies the Business Interoperability Interface, which describes the information system boundaries of one organization to its collaboration partners and connects internal and external information systems. Detailed procedure models specify the usage of the AIOS; its application to an example scenario as well as prototypes that implement core aspects of the AIOS exemplify the method. This book addresses researchers as well as practitioners interested in the areas of organizational interoperability and the modeling and enactment of collaborative business processes.
