Crystal plasticity is usually controlled by a limited number of elementary dislocation mechanisms, even in complex structures. Those which determine dislocation mobility and how it changes under the influence of stress and temperature are of key importance for understanding and predicting the strength of materials. The authors describe in a consistent way a variety of thermally activated microscopic mechanisms of dislocation mobility in a range of crystals. The principles of the mechanisms and equations of dislocation motion are revisited and new ones are proposed. These describe mostly friction forces on dislocations such as the lattice resistance to glide or those due to sessile cores, as well as dislocation cross-slip and climb. They are critically assessed by comparison with the best available experimental results of microstructural characterization, in situ straining experiments under an electron or a synchrotron beam, as well as accurate transient mechanical tests such as stress relaxation experiments. Some recent attempts at atomistic modeling of dislocation cores under stress and temperature are also considered since they offer a complementary description of core transformations and associated energy barriers. In addition to offering guidance and assistance for further experimentation, the book indicates new ways to extend the body of data in particular areas such as lattice resistance to glide.

Plasticity documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Brown University, Rhode Island, 5-7 April 1960. It was sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research of the U.S. Navy and Brown University. The symposium was devoted to plasticity. The intention was to provide critical reviews of recent developments in certain areas of plasticity of particular current interest and importance, and to supplement these with short accounts of related current research work. The papers presented at the symposium covered the following areas: atomic theory of plastic flow and fracture; stress-strain relations including thermoplasticity and creep; basic theory including stability and uniqueness; boundary value problems including plates and shells; dynamic loading and plastic waves; and developments in design. Two talks were also held for the purpose of reviewing the present status of application of plasticity in design of naval vessels. The symposium was opened by Captain J. C. Myers on behalf of the Office of Naval Research and by Professor W. Prager on behalf of Brown University. Professor Prager closed the symposium by presenting a brief resume of the main accomplishments and trends in plasticity brought to light during the symposium.

The classical, phenomenological theory of plastically anisotropic materials has passed a long way: from the work of von Mises presented in 1928, and the HilI formulation given in 1948, to the latest papers on large elastic-plastic deformations of anisotropic metal sheets. A characteristic feature of this approach is a linear flow rule and a quadratic yield criterion. Mathematical simplicity of the theory is a reason of its numerous applications to the analysis of engineering structures during the onset of plastic deformations. However, such an approach is not sufficient for description of the metal forming processes, when a metal element undergoes very large plastic strains. If we take an initially isotropic piece of metal, it becomes plastically anisotropic during the forming process, and the induced anisotropy progressively increases. This fact strongly determines directions of plastic flow, and it leads to an unexpected strain localization in sheet elements. To explain the above, it is necessary to take into account a polycrystalline structure of the metal, plastic slips on slip systems of grains, crystallographic lattice rotations, and at last, a formation of textures and their evolution during the whole deformation process. In short, it is necessary to introduce the plasticity of crystals and polycrystals. The polycrystal analysis shows that, when the advanced plastic strains take place, some privileged crystallographic directions, called a crystallographic texture, occur in the material. The texture formation and evolution are a primary reason for the induced plastic anisotropy in pure metals.
