Synopsis Hypercube Algorithms by : Sanjay Ranka

Fundamentals algorithms for SIMD and MIMD hypercubes are developed. These include algorithms for such problems as data broadcasting, data sum, prefix sum, shift, data circulation, data accumulation, sorting, random access reads and writes and data permutation. The fundamental algorithms are then used to obtain efficient hypercube algorithms for matrix multiplication, image processing problems such as convolution, template matching, hough transform, clustering and image processing transformation, and string editing. Most of the algorithms in this book are for hypercubes with the number of processors being a function of problems size. However, for image processing problems, the book also includes algorithms for and MIMD hypercube with a small number of processes. Experimental results on an NCUBE/77 MIMD hypercube are also presented. The book is suitable for use in a one-semester or one-quarter course on hypercube algorithms. For students with no prior exposure to parallel algorithms, it is recommended that one week will be spent on the material in chapter 1, about six weeks on chapter 2 and one week on chapter 3. The remainder of the term can be spent covering topics from the rest of the book.

Synopsis Knapsack Problems by : Silvano Martello

Here is a state of art examination on exact and approximate algorithms for a number of important NP-hard problems in the field of integer linear programming, which the authors refer to as ``knapsack.'' Includes not only the classical knapsack problems such as binary, bounded, unbounded or binary multiple, but also less familiar problems such as subset-sum and change-making. Well known problems that are not usually classified in the knapsack area, including generalized assignment and bin packing, are also covered. The text fully develops an algorithmic approach without losing mathematical rigor.

Synopsis Parallel Algorithms for Knapsack Type Problems by : Vassil Alexandrov

This book brings together current research direction in the mapping of dynamic programming recurrence equations for Knapsack Type problems, which include Unbounded Knapsack Problem, 0/1 Knapsack Problem, Subset Sum Problem, Change Making Problem, onto so-called regular parallel architectures. In particular, it focuses on heuristic and more formal techniques for mapping. The text is based on substantially revised papers published by the authors and their colleagues in the literature but re-written to provide an overall view of the subject area.

Synopsis Optimization Methods and Applications by : Xiao-qi Yang

This edited book is dedicated to Professor N. U. Ahmed, a leading scholar and a renowned researcher in optimal control and optimization on the occasion of his retirement from the Department of Electrical Engineering at University of Ottawa in 1999. The contributions of this volume are in the areas of optimal control, non linear optimization and optimization applications. They are mainly the im proved and expanded versions of the papers selected from those presented in two special sessions of two international conferences. The first special session is Optimization Methods, which was organized by K. L. Teo and X. Q. Yang for the International Conference on Optimization and Variational Inequality, the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1998. The other one is Optimal Control, which was organized byK. ~Teo and L. Caccetta for the Dynamic Control Congress, Ottawa, 1999. This volume is divided into three parts: Optimal Control; Optimization Methods; and Applications. The Optimal Control part is concerned with com putational methods, modeling and nonlinear systems. Three computational methods for solving optimal control problems are presented: (i) a regularization method for computing ill-conditioned optimal control problems, (ii) penalty function methods that appropriately handle final state equality constraints, and (iii) a multilevel optimization approach for the numerical solution of opti mal control problems. In the fourth paper, the worst-case optimal regulation involving linear time varying systems is formulated as a minimax optimal con trol problem.

Synopsis Knapsack Problems by : Hans Kellerer

This book provides a full-scale presentation of all methods and techniques available for the solution of the Knapsack problem. This most basic combinatorial optimization problem appears explicitly or as a subproblem in a wide range of optimization models with backgrounds such diverse as cutting and packing, finance, logistics or general integer programming. This monograph spans the range from a comprehensive introduction of classical algorithmic methods to the unified presentation of the most recent and advanced results in this area many of them originating from the authors. The chapters dealing with particular versions and extensions of the Knapsack problem are self-contained to a high degree and provide a valuable source of reference for researchers. Due to its simple structure, the Knapsack problem is an ideal model for introducing solution techniques to students of computer science, mathematics and economics. The first three chapters give an in-depth treatment of several basic techniques, making the book also suitable as underlying literature for courses in combinatorial optimization and approximation.

Synopsis Limits to Parallel Computation by : Raymond Greenlaw

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the most important topics in parallel computation. It is written so that it may be used as a self-study guide to the field, and researchers in parallel computing will find it a useful reference for many years to come. The first half of the book consists of an introduction to many fundamental issues in parallel computing. The second half provides lists of P-complete- and open problems. These lists will have lasting value to researchers in both industry and academia. The lists of problems, with their corresponding remarks, the thorough index, and the hundreds of references add to the exceptional value of this resource. While the exciting field of parallel computation continues to expand rapidly, this book serves as a guide to research done through 1994 and also describes the fundamental concepts that new workers will need to know in coming years. It is intended for anyone interested in parallel computing, including senior level undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and people in industry. As an essential reference, the book will be needed in all academic libraries.

Synopsis Handbook of Approximation Algorithms and Metaheuristics by : Teofilo F. Gonzalez

Handbook of Approximation Algorithms and Metaheuristics, Second Edition reflects the tremendous growth in the field, over the past two decades. Through contributions from leading experts, this handbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the underlying theory and methodologies, as well as the various applications of approximation algorithms and metaheuristics. Volume 1 of this two-volume set deals primarily with methodologies and traditional applications. It includes restriction, relaxation, local ratio, approximation schemes, randomization, tabu search, evolutionary computation, local search, neural networks, and other metaheuristics. It also explores multi-objective optimization, reoptimization, sensitivity analysis, and stability. Traditional applications covered include: bin packing, multi-dimensional packing, Steiner trees, traveling salesperson, scheduling, and related problems. Volume 2 focuses on the contemporary and emerging applications of methodologies to problems in combinatorial optimization, computational geometry and graphs problems, as well as in large-scale and emerging application areas. It includes approximation algorithms and heuristics for clustering, networks (sensor and wireless), communication, bioinformatics search, streams, virtual communities, and more. About the Editor Teofilo F. Gonzalez is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He completed his Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Oklahoma, the Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Texas at Dallas, before joining the UCSB computer science faculty in 1984. He spent sabbatical leaves at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education and Utrecht University.
