Synopsis New Zealand by :

NEW ZEALAND: EYE ON THE LANDSCAPE is a new book of high-quality landscape photography aimed at the top end of the New Zealand pictorial book market. The distinguishing feature of this book is that the images used will not be the work of one photographer, but rather a collection of the best images from a wide range of landscape photographers. The inspiration for this concept has been the extraordinary work that is exhibited by members of the Photographic Society of New Zealand, the umbrella organisation for a wide range of photographic groups. The majority of photographs created by their members, who range from professional, semi-professional to keen amateur, is hardly seen and never published. The best of it, however, is of the highest quality and often provides a fresh and original view of a much-photographed country. The book will follow a standard format, with a focus on all of the main areas visited by tourists. The selection will be undertaken by publisher Robbie Burton and photographer Craig Potton, one of the most experienced photoediting partnerships in the New Zealand publishing industry. NEW ZEALAND: EYE ON THE LANDSCAPE will be a fresh and original pictorial book, with the highest standard of photography and production.

Synopsis Harry Turbott by : Garth Falconer

Environmental design and landscape architecture are growing fields in New Zealand as people become more aware of the possibilities and benefits of sustainable development. From the early 1960s Dr Harry Turbott played a key role in introducing these concepts to New Zealand. Now his enormous work and rich legacy can be truly celebrated for the first time. Landscape architect, teacher and environmentalist Harry Turbott (1930- 2016) was at the forefront of the first wave of environmental design. This book showcases his life and prolific works, and is beautifully illustrated. The estranged son of well-known radio broadcaster Dr Turbott, Harry had a very interesting and colourful career. Upon graduating from the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture, he won a scholarship to study at Harvard University, where he completed a Master’s in Landscape Architecture in 1958. He then spent 18 months working closely with Dan Kiley, America’s foremost landscape architect, before touring Europe and India with his wife Nan. They returned to New Zealand in 1961 and settled in Karekare, a remote West Auckland beach. From here Harry embarked on a ground-breaking design career, working on motorways, beachfront farms, suburban shopping centres, national parks, Pacific Island resorts and ski fields. He also taught at Auckland’s School of Architecture and Town Planning for more than 30 years. All of Harry’s work showed immense respect and care for the environment. He believed the designer’s role was one of service to society to protect, restore and enhance the environment of which people were intimately and irrevocably part of. Harry recognised the importance of indigenous architecture. He embraced Māori and Pasifika cultures during many collaborative projects, including the restoration of Rarotonga’s Para O Tane Palace in Rarotonga and the Arataki Visitors Centre in the Waitākere Ranges. The biography offers an intimate portrait of Harry’s life, his global influences and outlines several of his legacy projects. The final section is a short chapter written by Sir Bob Harvey on the life of Harry’s wife and her work. Harry and Sir Bob were close friends due to their years spent as neighbours.

A tribute to the remarkable harmony that exists between the contrasting landscapes and cultures of New Zealand, this handsome addition to White Star's "Exploring Countries of the World" series portrays the diversity that makes this land a latter-day paradise. From the dense tropical forests and endless green valleys; majestic snowy peaks and sun-kissed beaches; modern urban centers and vast sheep farms; and-perhaps most dramatic of all-the ancient culture of the Maori, the images in New Zealand portray unexpected juxtapositions unlike anything else on earth.

Synopsis Landscape and Quaternary Environmental Change in New Zealand by : James Shulmeister

This book brings together an overview of the recent geological history, active earth and biological processes and human settlement of New Zealand. Topics covered include the very active neotectonic and volcanic setting. Mountain geomorphic processes are examined and new ideas about landsliding are highlighted. The exceptional sedimentary archives of the Whanganui Basin are also presented. As one of two land masses that extend into the southern mid-latitudes, New Zealand is ideally located to investigate changes in Southern Ocean climate. Related to this, mountain glaciation in New Zealand is a focus in global climate change debates. New Zealand also has a unique biota due to its long isolation and is the last major land mass to be settled by people. Advances in DNA technologies have revolutionised our understanding of the histories and processes involved. The book provides a comprehensive review of existing work and highlights new ideas and major debates across all these fields.
