Synopsis Face of Courage by : Sarah Hudleston

Morgan Tsvangirai had an advantage over many other rural Rhodesian children born in the 1950s – his parents believed he should receive the best possible education to ensure his future. The first of nine children, Tsvangirai made the most of his schooling and subsequent opportunities, which saw him start his working life as a sweeper in a textile factory and move on to the Trojan Nickel Mine as a plant operator. It was here that Tsvangirai's involvement with the mining trade union began, and in 1985 he took up the full-time position of vice-president of Zimbabwe's Associated Mine Workers Union. Three years later he became secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). Over the next ten years Tsvangirai played a key role in uniting Zimbabwe's trade union and civil movements into an informal opposition to the Zanu-PF government of Robert Mugabe. This culminated, in September 1999, in the launch of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Under Tsvangirai's leadership, the MDC contested the 2000 parliamentary election and the 2002 presidential election, both hampered by electoral irregularities and intimidation, including two sets of treason charges leveled at Tsvangirai. Against a backdrop of the wider social, political and economic developments in Zimbabwe, The Face of Courage focuses on the life and career of Morgan Tsvangirai. It draws on extended interviews with Tsvangirai and those close to him in order to provide an in-depth look at an internationally respected man who has dedicated himself to restoring Zimbabwe to a workable democracy.

Synopsis Morgan Tsvangirai: At the Deep End by : Morgan Tsvangirai

Morgan Tsvangirai's dramatic political battle with Zimbabwe’s dictatorial monolith Robert Mugabe stands as one of the most intriguing and important world events of recent times—this is his autobiography From village life as the son of a humble carpenter to struggling for power with Mugabe as the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, this is Morgan Tsvangirai's amazing story. Once an avid supporter of Mugabe's party Zanu-PF, Tsvangirai grew to detest their violence and oppression, leading him to found the Movement for Democratic Change. Tsvangirai deployed basic but effective tools of national resistance with clear vision and exceptional courage, despite multiple arrests and severe beatings. His successful formation of a coalition government kept alive Zimbabwe's hopes of peace and democracy, establishing Tsvangirai as a luminary in a continent all too often known for bloody leadership.

Synopsis Citizen of Zimbabwe by : Stephen Chan

Morgan Tsvangiraiís appointment as Zimbabweís Prime Minister in 2009 followed many yearsí leadership of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trades Unions and the Movement for Democratic Change. How has that experience equipped him for high national office? Does he have the personal, intellectual and political qualities required to be President? In July 2004, as he was awaiting the verdict in his treason trial, Tsvangirai spent several days in conversation with Stephen Chan. Chan was concerned to find out if Tsvangirai was more than ëmerely a charismatic leader of the oppositioní; if he had ëhis own intellectual agenda [and] political philosophyí. His questions were even-handed and astute. ëDiscussion by discussion, Morgan Tsvangirai had become more open, more human ñ less cautious and, paradoxically, more obviously and naturally presidential.í Five years later, having reviewed the events since their discussions took place, Chan writes: ëI have not made a saint of him, not even an Atlas. I hope I have not criticized him too much or too unfairly. Probably no one could have done for Zimbabwe what he has.í Citizen of Zimbabwe is a rare and intimate portrait of political leadership in Africa.

Synopsis Morgan Richard Tsvangirai's Legacy by : Ngonidzashe Marongwe

Morgan Richard Tsvangirai is arguably the most polarising figure and advocate of democracy and human rights in the history of opposition politics in Zimbabwe. He is as much a topic of debate in Zimbabwe and beyond as the late president Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Tsvangirai's legacy, like Mugabe's, remains indisputably controversial and conflicted. Broadly, the divided opinion on the Tsvangirai legacy can be represented, firstly, by those who argue that Tsvangirai was the champion of democracy and the face of the struggle for human rights in Zimbabwe. In this light, Tsvangirai has been variously described as a "selfless...people's hero", a "colossus of the struggle for democracy", "the commander of the struggle", "a symbol of courage and resistance", and "the doyen of constitutionalism" in Zimbabwe. On the other hand, critics have described Tsvangirai as a "sell-out", "a Judas Iscariot", "traitor", and "coward", among other nefarious and pejorative characterisations. Drawing on all these opinions and the various characterisations of Tsvangirai, this book provides a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary appraisal of a gigantic trade unionist and political figure who, in his life and in death, inspires different narratives, emotions and values. This book is therefore about a mortal but "living" figure who left an indelible mark on Zimbabwe, Africa and the rest of the world in fields such as trade unionism, governance and politics. As such, the book is handy for students and practitioners in African studies, political science, policy studies, economics, history, global studies and development studies.

Synopsis Microsoft Word - President Morgan Tsvangirai.doc by :

As Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, I call on the supporters of both ZANU-PF and the MDC to unite with all Zimbabweans, to put the interests of our nation and our people first and to work together for a New Zimbabwe. [...] ZANU-PF is the party of our national liberation; the party of the creation of the modern Zimbabwe; the mother party of many liberation movements across the whole continent of Africa. [...] The first priority of the government is to unlock the food already in our country and distribute it to our people. [...] The hand with which I sign this agreement is the hand I extend to President Robert Mugabe - for the well-being of our nation - in my pledge to work with all the leaders of Zimbabwe to bring our nation back to life. [...] And so, In the sight of the world, with the hopes of our people, praying for the wisdom from almighty God, I sign this agreement and enter a new government and a way forward to new era of prosperity and democracy for all Zimbabweans.

Synopsis Zimbabwe by : H. Besada

Formerly one of Africa s most promising economies, Zimbabwe has begun a process of economic reconstruction after decades of political turmoil and economic mismanagement. The advent of a national unity government in February 2009 launched a new but still tentative era of political stability. The government has a daunting political and economic agenda. Top priorities include restoring the rule of law, demonstrating fiscal responsibility, and putting in place macroeconomic and structural reforms to win the confidence of domestic and international investors. An optimistic time frame for its socio-economic recovery is now estimated to be at least ten years. Zimbabwe: Picking Up the Pieces chronicles the steps that led to the downturn of the Zimbabwean state and economy before assessing what can be done to resuscitate a once-thriving society. Leading experts from and on the region explore the country s options on key governance issues, from strengthening institutions to addressing food security to promoting private sector development to mobilizing donor country assistance. This collection offers a unique glimpse into a fragile state and the severe costs Zimbabweans have and will have to endure if there is to be any hope of recovery.

Synopsis The Year of Harmonized Elections Without Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai by : Godknows Maremera

If a person doesn't really know the ups and downs of history pertaining to the nationality he/she belongs tends to be easily cheated and bought by people who view politics as a game of fattening their pockets. The subject of politics, without knowledge and understanding ends up being dirty, more of sloganeering without tangible evidence to show up for the rich words enshrined in the election campaign manifestos. The electorate always feel cheated and there is need for political parties to repent and adopt excellent and original work to marshal the masses of Zimbabwe out of dire poverty into the promised land of riches, wealth and long life. It is my hope that this book has quality content, reader goodwill and mind is not captured, the readers are allowed to critically think about the contents, in the long run love is the answer, righteousness and justice. We have for several years been aware of the shortage of suitable texts on these subjects but I hope a new dawn has come. Let the ideas of political parties be tested through this fire of truth.Having learnt the different complex systems undermining the transparent and efficient governance of many African nations Godknows Maremera decided to write about the political issues that give birth to such kind of leadership. It would be inadequate to try to separate the background of an African politician and how they conduct their politics. For African nations to move from autocratic systems in the name of democracy it can take longer than the time they were fighting colonialism the reason being that the system has been practiced for long. The kingdoms of the past used to be hereditary but now we have voted for kings supported by constitutions that defend them and state machines of violence to suppress any opposition. It is not easy to live a life of integrity where everyone is compromised, but it is possible. The church settings are worthy of scrutiny. Whilst the situation is getting worse some even join the radical blind politicians saying endure the bad things soon it is going to be ok. RAMBAI MAKASHINGA tricks are being played and the people know them. False prophets or religious politically affiliated men of God are supporting an evil that is about to take a toll on their offerings and tithes. Only when their offerings and tithes are dwindling you hear them reverse their words saying they must go on a round table for talks such that people may be alleviated from suffering. This is not done to help the people or for the love of congregants but because the offerings and tithes sources are dwindling. You see how corrupted church leaders act like. However true men of God have prophesied in advance of what is going to happen. The people must prepare and brace for the worse. They can celebrate the departure of Mugabe but they will be crying more that they made a mistake. The new government is failing to deliver bread and butter to the people. Instead of addressing the challenge they will divert their attention to seeking the destruction of MDC Alliance and sanctions. Problems that must be solved are out there, how they will be solved whilst the leaders are concentrating on other issues. Instead of dwindling problems, we have them multiplying. The vice president is sick instead of being working for the government. The senility of man in his quest to conquer the world before he conquers one-man himself.Christmas is not that colorful many people can't afford the necessities that bring jollity to this holiday. As for the coming New Year because of the prophetic promises by the different man of God Zimbabweans fill up churches praying for a prosperous new year. What a misguided prayer. Instead, they must pray for God to keep them alive from coming disasters, Cyclone IDAI, the fire cases and drought. It is going to be a deep mess.

Synopsis Why Mugabe Won by : Stephen Chan

The 2013 general elections in Zimbabwe were widely expected to mark a shift in the nation's political system, and a greater role for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. However, the results, surprisingly, were overwhelmingly in favour of long-time President Robert Mugabe, who swept the presidential, parliamentary and senatorial polls under relatively credible and peaceful conditions. In this book, a valuable and accessible read for both students and scholars working in African politics, and those with a general interest in the politics of the region, Stephen Chan and Julia Gallagher explore the domestic and international context of these landmark elections. Drawing on extensive research among political elites, grassroots activists and ordinary voters, Chan and Gallagher examine the key personalities, dramatic events, and broader social and political context of Mugabe's success, and what this means as Zimbabwe moves towards a future without Mugabe.
