Lexicography is one of the oldest linguistic sub-disciplines and began to compile extensive corpora early on as the basis for dictionary work. Surprisingly, these corpora and the dictionary articles have not been used very frequently for the study of language variation, although most dictionaries do not only contain information about word meanings and grammar, but also on regional distribution or style level. This volume explores the value of lexicographical data in the study of language variation. The contributions focus on different types of dictionaries for different languages as well as on various linguistic research questions ranging from the dictionaries' approach to loan words or morphology to practical issues regarding digital frameworks for lexicographic work.

This book is concerned with dictionary-making and dictionary-research carried out in Romania. The outcome of extensive, hands-on experience in dictionary making and dictionary research, the volume addresses a range of culture-specific topics related to both dictionary-as-process and dictionary-as-product. It reflects the interests and concerns of all the stakeholders on the lexicographic continuum: theorists, practitioners, and dictionary users. The topics covered here encompass a number of macro- and micro-structural aspects relating to paper and online, monolingual and bilingual, general and specialized reference works. They create a composite picture of the lexicographic landscape in Romania set against a wider sociocultural backdrop. It is this ecology of dictionary making that helps explain the priorities, influences, pressures, and challenges that have shaped the local dictionary culture. Given the new technological advances and their influence and imprint in the design and development of dictionaries and lexicographic resources, it seems important to put together a series of publications that address this new situation, dealing in particular with multilingual and electronic lexicography in an increasingly digital, multilingual and multicultural society. This is the main objective of this volume, which is structured in two central aspects. In the first of them the concept of multilingual lexicography is discussed in regard to the influence that the Internet and the application of digital technologies have exercised and continue to exercise both in the conception and design of dictionaries and new lexicographic application tools as well as the emergence of new types of users and forms of consultation. The role of the dictionary must necessarily be related to social development and changes. In the second thematic section, different dictionaries and resources that focus on a multilingual and electronic approach to the linguistic data for their lexicographical treatment and consultation are presented.

Traditional dialects have been encroached upon by the increasing mobility of their speakers and by the onslaught of national languages in education and mass media. Typically, older dialects are “leveling” to become more like national languages. This is regrettable when the last articulate traces of a culture are lost, but it also promotes a complex dynamics of interaction as speakers shift from dialect to standard and to intermediate compromises between the two in their forms of speech. Varieties of speech thus live on in modern communities, where they still function to mark provenance, but increasingly cultural and social provenance as opposed to pure geography. They arise at times from the need to function throughout the different groups in society, but they also may have roots in immigrants’ speech, and just as certainly from the ineluctable dynamics of groups wishing to express their identity to themselves and to the world. The future of dialects is a selection of the papers presented at Methods in Dialectology XV, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014. While the focus is on methodology, the volume also includes specialized studies on varieties of Catalan, Breton, Croatian, (Belgian) Dutch, English (in the US, the UK and in Japan), German (including Swiss German), Italian (including Tyrolean Italian), Japanese, and Spanish as well as on heritage languages in Canada.
