Synopsis A Local Perspective on Lexicography by : Marinela Burada
This book is concerned with dictionary-making and dictionary-research carried out in Romania. The outcome of extensive, hands-on experience in dictionary making and dictionary research, the volume addresses a range of culture-specific topics related to both dictionary-as-process and dictionary-as-product. It reflects the interests and concerns of all the stakeholders on the lexicographic continuum: theorists, practitioners, and dictionary users. The topics covered here encompass a number of macro- and micro-structural aspects relating to paper and online, monolingual and bilingual, general and specialized reference works. They create a composite picture of the lexicographic landscape in Romania set against a wider sociocultural backdrop. It is this ecology of dictionary making that helps explain the priorities, influences, pressures, and challenges that have shaped the local dictionary culture. The book will also provide researchers, practitioners, teachers and students with a clearer view of the peculiarities of the dictionary.

Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of Endangered Languages by : Peter K. Austin
It is generally agreed that about 7,000 languages are spoken across the world today and at least half may no longer be spoken by the end of this century. This state-of-the-art Handbook examines the reasons behind this dramatic loss of linguistic diversity, why it matters, and what can be done to document and support endangered languages. The volume is relevant not only to researchers in language endangerment, language shift and language death, but to anyone interested in the languages and cultures of the world. It is accessible both to specialists and non-specialists: researchers will find cutting-edge contributions from acknowledged experts in their fields, while students, activists and other interested readers will find a wealth of readable yet thorough and up-to-date information.

Synopsis Postcolonial Linguistic Voices by : Eric A. Anchimbe
This volume investigates sociolinguistic discourses, identity choices and their representations in postcolonial national and social life, and traces them to the impact of colonial contact. The chapters stitch together current voices and identities emerging within both ex-colonized and ex-colonizer communities as each copes with the social, lingual, cultural, and religious mixes triggered by colonialism. These mixes, reflected in the five thematic parts of the book - 'postcolonial identities', 'nationhood discourses', 'translating the postcolonial', 'living the postcolonial', and 'colonizing the colonizer' - call for deeper investigations of postcolonial communities using emic approaches.

Synopsis Theories of Lexical Semantics by : Dirk Geeraerts
Theories of Lexical Semantics offers a comprehensive overview of the major traditions of word meaning research in linguistics. In spite of the growing importance of the lexicon in linguistic theory, no overview of the main theoretical trends in lexical semantics is currently available. This book fills that gap by charting the evolution of the discipline from the mid nineteenth century to the present day. It presents the main ideas, the landmark publications, and thedominant figures of five traditions: historical-philological semantics, structuralist semantics, generativist semantics, neostructuralist semantics, and cognitive semantics. The theoretical and methodological relationship between the approaches is a major point of attention throughout the text: going well beyond amere chronological enumeration, the book does not only describe the theoretical currents of lexical semantics, but also the undercurrents that have shaped its evolution.

Synopsis Language and Communication in the Digital Age by : Marinela Burada
The digital age has exercised considerable influence not only on language use but also on research and teaching in this field. The present volume showcases some aspects of language-related investigation that reflect the interests, experiences, and challenges of theorists, practitioners, and language instructors today. Drawing on the linguistic corpus, parallel texts in different languages and a variety of approaches and methodologies, the book features three main lines of inquiry: L1 syntactic structure, L1-L2 contact and transfer, and L2 pedagogy. The use of case-studies and authentic data makes Language and Communication in the Digital Age a valuable source of insights into some linguistic peculiarities of Romanian and English, and highlights new research avenues for specialists in language and communication.

Synopsis Exploring Language Variation, Diversity and Change by : Marinela Burada
While communication is becoming increasingly multimodal, verbal language and its use in different communicative situations still hold centre-stage in many research circles. The articles in this book explore native and second languages from three vantage points: syntactic structure, their uses in professional settings, and second/foreign language pedagogy. Using different methods and methodologies, the contributions here draw on both theoretical and empirical data in order to investigate a series of language-internal and language-external factors that both account for the structural peculiarities of Romanian and English, and have a bearing on its translatability and learnability by students of English as a second language. Featuring the hands-on experience of teachers and learners in the Romanian context, this volume provides useful insights and illustrative examples of relevance to theorists and practitioners in language and communication-related fields.

Synopsis The Landscape of Lexicography by : Alina Villalva
This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. Funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union

Synopsis Re-Configuring Romanian Culture on its Way Towards Modernity by : Alexandra Chiriac
As a direct result of an international conference organized in the year 2021, the volume tries to shed light on the way in which the translation activity contributed to the Romanian culture and language, drawing from different traditions and cultures it came in contact with (directly or indirectly), and thus mingling the own Slavonic church tradition with the new and revolutionary ideas of the Western world and using this mix to modernise the society, language and the politics in this region. Furthermore, this eclectic collection of articles highlights the fact that it was neither the exclusive merit of the Transylvanian scholars, nor of the Moldavian or Wallachian ones to have contributed decisively to the formation of the national consciousness and to the standardisation of the language, but it was rather the collaboration, the circulation of people and ideas that furthered the modernity in all three Romanian Principalities. Without disregarding the regional specificity of the Romanian Enlightenment, the volume focuses on the interconnections of the agents involved in the cultural transfer, on the networks they created for the dissemination of knowledge and political thought and on the common effort to render the new ideas and concepts of the foreign cultures in a national language that could be accessible to the Romanians.
