As a direct result of an international conference organized in the year 2021, the volume tries to shed light on the way in which the translation activity contributed to the Romanian culture and language, drawing from different traditions and cultures it came in contact with (directly or indirectly), and thus mingling the own Slavonic church tradition with the new and revolutionary ideas of the Western world and using this mix to modernise the society, language and the politics in this region. Furthermore, this eclectic collection of articles highlights the fact that it was neither the exclusive merit of the Transylvanian scholars, nor of the Moldavian or Wallachian ones to have contributed decisively to the formation of the national consciousness and to the standardisation of the language, but it was rather the collaboration, the circulation of people and ideas that furthered the modernity in all three Romanian Principalities. Without disregarding the regional specificity of the Romanian Enlightenment, the volume focuses on the interconnections of the agents involved in the cultural transfer, on the networks they created for the dissemination of knowledge and political thought and on the common effort to render the new ideas and concepts of the foreign cultures in a national language that could be accessible to the Romanians.

Presentations of National Cultures. Fifty-one texts illustrate the evolution of modernism in the east-European region. Essays, articles, poems, or excerpts from longer works offer new opportunities of possible comparisons of the respective national cultures, from the different ideological approaches and finessing projects of how to create the modern state liberal, conservative, socialist and others to the literary and scientific attempts at squaring the circle of individual and collective identities.

Based on the idea that there is a considerable difference between reality and discourse, the author points out that history is constantly reconstructed, adapted and sometimes mythicized from the perspectives of the present day, present states of mind and ideologies. He closely examines historical culture and conscience in nineteenth and twentieth century Romania, particularly concentrating on the impact of the national ideology on history. Boia's innovative analysis identifies several key mythical configurations and shows how Romanians have reconstituted their own highly ideologized history over the last two centuries. The strength of History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness lies in the author's ability to fully deconstruct the entire Romanian historiographic system and demonstrate the increasing acuteness of national problems in general, and in particular the exploitation of history to support national ideology.

Anger is one of the basic emotions of human emotional experience, informing and guiding many of our choices and actions. Although it has received considerable scholarly attention in a number of disciplines, including linguistics, a basic question has still remained unresolved: why do variations in the folk model of anger exist across languages if it is indeed a basic emotion rooted in largely universal bodily experience? By drawing on a wide selection of comparable linguistic data from dozens of languages (including a number of less-researched languages), this volume provides the most comprehensive account of what is universal and what is variable in the folk model of anger – and why. It also investigates the role that metonymies might play in the emergence of anger-related metaphors and in what ways context influences or shapes anger metaphors and thereby the resulting folk model of anger. No such volume exists in the (cognitive) linguistic literature on anger – or on emotions for that matter. The book is thus an essential contribution to the study of anger and will serve as basic reading for any researcher interested in how the conceptualization of anger is constructed via the interplay of bodily experience, language and the larger cultural context.

Reconfiguring EU Peripheries explores the diverse nature of the European Union’s interactions with its peripheries. Focusing on a period of rising regional tensions marked most recently by the war in Ukraine, the volume casts new empirical and conceptual light on the diverse motivations that underpin the political elites’ attitudes towards the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Romania, Türkiye and Ukraine. The volume engages with various understandings of the EU’s interactions with its different peripheries and shows how these dynamics are closely related to the self-perceived nature of the societies in question in relation to the EU. The impact of recent crises and conflicts underscore in some cases the need for strengthening solidarity and for ‘more EU’, whereas others highlight the doubts and disappointment over the challenges these societies have faced over recent years. The empirically rich case studies enable both interpretations of and debates on the EU integration processes. A comparative exploration of countries at different stages in the EU accession process and the various political elites’ attitudes towards the EU outlines the essentially constructed nature of peripherality. By challenging the conventional understanding of contestation and peripherality, this volume is a worthwhile first step towards looking at the EU and the peripheries it creates from an alternative, and sometimes ignored, point of view.

Mobilities within the European Union (EU) have changed significantly since the classical intra-regional migrations of the 1950s–1970s. After a period of reduced, less visible flows in the 21st century mobilities increased again, first linked to EU expansion towards the East, and from 2008, with renewed South-North flows following the impact of the Great Recession on Southern European countries. It is in this context that the current volume explores how these recent migrations reflect new and more complex patterns of mobility, increasingly uncertain and unstable, involving both natives and naturalised migrants. It also seeks to unpack the multiple connections between these new migration systems and other systems affecting social protection, gender and citizenship, and how these intersect with other factors such as class, age, race and ethnicity. The different chapters of the book examine this covering a wide variety of cases, including intra-EU flows from Portugal and Spain, recent Spanish and Latin American migrants in London, Paris and Brussels, and Romanian migration to the UK and France, thus adding to its richness. This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and advanced students of Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Gender Studies, Public Policy, and Politics. Exploring the largely positive representations of Romanian Germans predominating in post-1989 Romanian society, this book shows that the underlying reasons for German prestige are strongly connected with Romania’s endeavors to become European. The election, in 2014, of Klaus Iohannis as Romania’s president was hailed as evidence that the country chose a 'European’ future: that Iohannis belonged to Romania’s tiny German minority was also considered to have played a part in his success. Cercel argues that representations of Germans in Romania, descendants of twelfth-century and eighteenth-century colonists, become actually a symbolic resource for asserting but also questioning Romania’s European identity. Such representations link Romania’s much-desired European belonging with German presence, whilst German absence is interpreted as a sign of veering away from Europe. Investigating this case of discursive "self-colonization" and this apparent symbolic embrace of the German Other in Romania, the book offers a critical study of the discourses associated with Romania’s postcommunist "Europeanization" to contribute a better understanding of contemporary West-East relationships in the European context. This fresh and insightful approach will interest postgraduates and scholars interested in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and in German minorities outside Germany. It should also appeal to scholars of memory studies and those interested in the study of otherness in general.

Complexity, Multi-Disciplinarity, and Beyond addresses the issue of complexity mainly in the fields of humanities and social sciences. It is a continuation of Interdisciplinarity: Toward the Definition of a Metadiscipline? (Lang, 2001) in which the main question is related to the role of interdisciplinarity and disciplinarian thinking in confronting complexity in general. The present book focuses on complexity in the humanities but also revisits some of the ideas brought forth in Interdisciplinarity, concerning the limitations of disciplinarian thinking and interdisciplinarity in their confrontations with complexity. The development of conceptual tools, as well as theories and models for complexity outside the realm of «hard» sciences, is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, it is essential to learn to cope with complexity, and every effort in this area must be encouraged.

This edited volume examines manele (sing. manea), an urban Romanian song-dance ethnopop genre that combines local traditional and popular music with Balkan and Middle Eastern elements. The genre is performed primarily by male Romani musicians at weddings and clubs and appeals especially to Romanian and Romani youth. It became immensely popular after the collapse of communism, representing for many the newly liberated social conditions of the post-1989 world. But manele have also engendered much controversy among the educated and professional elite, who view the genre as vulgar and even “alien” to the Romanian national character. The essays collected here examine the “manea phenomenon” as a vibrant form of cultural expression that engages in several levels of social meaning, all informed by historical conditions, politics, aesthetics, tradition, ethnicity, gender, class, and geography.
