The essays in this volume examine institutional change in five of the most important areas of economic life in central and eastern Europe after 1989: international and regional economic reintegration; the restructuring of the industrial base; how economic interests are to be represented; fiscal and budgetary reform; and reform of the social welfare system. The editors use these research findings to buttress a somewhat heterodox theory of institutional dynamics, one pointing to "discursive structures" and "governance structures" as key dimensions that, in combination, affect institutional change in this part of the world so that an economic "revolution" becomes an evolutionary processes of gradual transition.

Providing case study analyses of the politics of science in and around the International Polar Year of 2007-2008, this volume makes a distinct contribution to ongoing research focusing on the relationship between science, international politics, law and history. The contributors combine both interdisciplinary and multi-theoretical approaches to engage directly with the most recent debates in international relations scholarship, to include discussions of arctic climate change, governance issues, reflections on the Antarctic Treaty and the science-geopolitics interface amongst others. Legacy cities, also commonly referred to as shrinking, or post-industrial cities, are places that have experienced sustained population loss and economic contraction. In the United States, legacy cities are those that are largely within the Rust Belt that thrived during the first half of the 20th century. In the second half of the century, these cities declined in economic power and population leaving a legacy of housing stock, warehouse districts, and infrastructure that is ripe for revitalization. This volume explores not only the commonalities across legacy cities in terms of industrial heritage and population decline, but also their differences. Legacy Cities poses the questions: What are the legacies of legacy cities? How do these legacies drive contemporary urban policy, planning and decision-making?
