Synopsis Together by : Julius Chingono

THE TWO ZIMBABWEAN WRITERS featured in this collection of stories and poems could not be more different. John Eppel is an English literature teacher in Bulawayo; Julius Chingono, from Norton, near Harare, was a rock-blaster in mines for many years. Eppel is a deliberate stylist, while Chingono is a deliberate anti-stylist. The western literary tradition is pervasive in Eppel's writing; Chingono is his own tradition. In another sense, however, they could not be more similar. Both share an aversion for those in power who exploit it to the detriment of all but their cronies and themselves; both feel a deep compassion for the poor and the marginalized of Zimbabwe. And they are both very funny.

Synopsis Long Time Coming. Short Writings from Zimbabwe by : Jane Morris

Long Time Coming brings together short stories and poems from thirty-three writers that provide snapshots of this turbulent period in Zimbabwe's history. Snapshots of living in a country where basic services have crumbled: where shops have no food, taps no water, banks no money, hospitals no drugs, bars no beer. Snapshots of characters surviving against seemingly insurmountable odds. Horrific snapshots of the abuse of power, of violence and oppression, of the destruction of dreams. But this is Zimbabwe and there are lighter moments and moments of hope: in some of life's simple pleasures, in the coming of the rains, in the wink and the smile of a stranger, in a challenge to patriarchy, in the inner strength of the people, in fighting back. The writers are Raisedon Baya, Wim Boswinkel, Diana Charsley, Brian Chikwava, Julius Chingono, Mathew Chokuwenga, Bhekilizwe Dube, John Eppel, Peter Finch, Petina Gappah, David Goodwin, Anne Simone Hutton, Monireh Jassat, Ignatius Mabasa, Fungai Rufaro Machirori, Judy Maposa, Deon Marcus, Christopher Mlalazi, Gothataone Moeng, Wame Molefhe, Linda Msebele, Mzana Mthimkhulu, Peter Ncube, Thabisani Ndlovu, Pathisa Nyathi, Andrew Pocock, John S. Read, Bryony Rheam, Lloyd Robson, Ian Rowlands, Owen Sheers, Chaltone Tshabangu and Sandisile Tshuma.

Synopsis Introduction to Burundi by : Gilad James, PhD

Burundi, a small landlocked country located in East Africa, has a population of approximately 12 million people. The country is bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Burundi, which gained independence from Belgium in 1962, is known for its political instability, poverty, and ethnic conflict. The country has experienced several coups and attempted coups since gaining independence, with the most recent one occurring in 2015. Burundi is also known for its civil war, which lasted from 1993 to 2005 and claimed the lives of approximately 300,000 people. Despite these challenges, Burundi remains home to several ethnic groups, including the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa people, and has a rich cultural heritage. Burundi is primarily an agricultural economy, with coffee and tea being the main exports. However, the country also has significant deposits of nickel, cobalt, and uranium. Burundi has a relatively young population, with over half of its inhabitants being under the age of 25. The country has made significant progress in improving its healthcare and education systems, with a particularly strong focus on increasing access for girls and women. The government has also implemented policies aimed at reducing poverty and promoting economic development. Despite these efforts, Burundi remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with the majority of the population living below the poverty line.
