Synopsis Indiana Historical Society Publications, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by :

Excerpt from Indiana Historical Society Publications, Vol. 1 In 1886 several gentlemen of Indianapolis agreed to unite for the purpose of preserving historical material pertaining to the state. Among those asked to join was Major Jonathan W. Gordon, who had been a member of the society, and who suggested its reorganization. This plan was adopted. A meet ing of the surviving members of the society was called, new members were elected, and the society was once more put in motion. Since then meetings have been held regularly, and the work of the society has been prosecuted with persistence if not with vigor. Synopsis The Environment of Abraham Lincoln in Indiana, With an Account of the De Bruler Family, Vol. 8 by : John E. Iglehart

Excerpt from The Environment of Abraham Lincoln in Indiana, With an Account of the De Bruler Family, Vol. 8: Indiana Historical Society Publications, Volume 8, Number 3 William Henry Milburn, the blind man eloquent, and Judge James Hall lived among the western people, were in sympathy with them, and have left truthful descriptions of the pioneer in the old Northwest, as well as in Kentucky, where the Indian wars during the Revolution were, at so great cost, won chiefly by the backwoodsmen of the Alleghenies. Milburn's eloquent and profound interpretation of the life and character of the westerner, his description of the characteristics of the western mind and of the schooling of the wilderness are true to life, as are also Judge James Hall's fine descriptions of the western people among whom he lived.9 We have also fair and im partial accounts of the backwoodsmen of the Alleghenies by Roosevelt, to whom the descendants of the Men of the Western Waters, among whom are the active members of the Southwestern Indiana Historical Society, recognize a last ing obligation. The western type of mind and character was fully developed in Abraham Lincoln. The educating influence of wilderness life affected him in his development in Spencer County from the age of seven to twenty-one long before the latter age he showed a maturity far above that of the average man of twenty-one years. Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.

A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Synopsis The Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 6 by : Indiana Historical Society

Excerpt from The Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 6: March, 1910 The theory, heretofore not much more than a theory, which legislators and courts are now making more a matter of practice, is that there are three parties to every divorce suit, the plaintiff, the defendant and the State. It is in following out this theory that the State has provided that the prosecuting attorney shall ap pear in person, or by deputy, in every case Where the defendant Is not otherwise represented. Some fraudulent cases, and cases that are brought by collusion, are detected in this way, and the total. Number Of decrees granted rendered somewhat smaller, 'and to this extent the community 15 served; but are the 'condi tions behindithe application bettered any by the refusal Of appli 1nations which the prosecutor defeats? Synopsis Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 18 by : Indiana University

Excerpt from Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 18: March, 1922 From 1830 to 1850, nearly all orators saw fit to have a high sounding beginning, an argumentative discourse, and a lofty and grandiloquent peroration, in which their figures of speech soar broad-cast to the high heavens. Occasionally arguments were replaced by things sentimental. There was a lofty and bombastic style not often seen in these days. The faded portraits of pioneer days usually show an orator in a full dress suit, or a swallow-tailed coat, with one hand stuck in front between the buttons in imitation of Daniel Webster, waiting for the applause to die down. Synopsis The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1905, Vol. 1 by : George S. Cottman

Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1905, Vol. 1: First Quarter Mr. Dillon was one of the many in the world's history who hav not prospered according to their deserts. He clove to his work wit that un agging passion which should distinguish the true worke in the exercise of his natural talent, but his books brought hi little remuneration. Unworldly, simple-minded and idealistic, wit little regard for self, he was illy qualified to contend for the world' rewards. A few stanch friends, who were drawn to him by hi ability and worth and beauty of character, exercised over him sort of paternal care, and through their efiorts he was appointed t various public offices which for thirty years afforded him a living From 1845 to 1851 he was State Librarian, then assistant Secretar of State and Secretary of the Board of Agriculture, and after tha an appointee to a clerkship in the Department of the Interior a Washington City, where he lived twelve years. The last four year of his life he spent in Indianapolis, poor almost to the verge 0 want, his friends afterward suspected, although, with characteristi reserve, he kept that fact to himself. There are many who remem ber the retired, gentle old man with the never-absent side-glasse concealing his eyes. Being unmarried and entirely alone as re garded blood ties, he occupied a poorly-furnished room by himsel in the top of the old Johnson block, where the State Life buildin now stands. Here he died on the a7th of February, 1879. No until his effects were examined was it known that he was so poor His very books had gone one by one to the second-hand store, lik household treasures to the pawn-shop, and his friends agree in be lieving that the fear of want hastened his end.
