Synopsis The Mystery of Christ by : Keith Ward

‘Keith Ward . . . makes complex matters readily accessible.’ Rowan Williams At the heart of Christian faith lies a vision of Christ present at the beginning of creation, in the crucified and risen Jesus, and at the end of all things. This vision retains its ancient power and gains new depth as it is reshaped in the light of our advanced understanding of a vast and evolving cosmos. To help us form a truly contemporary Christian spirituality, Keith Ward, writing in our own time and place (rather than the fourteenth century of Julian of Norwich or the twentieth of Thomas Merton), offers a set of reflections on what he believes to be the unique and life-transforming revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ. And as we explore the spiritual truths relating to this mystery expressed in the Gospels, meditation leads naturally to prayer.

Synopsis Causing Actions by : Paul M. Pietroski

Thoughts often cause deeds. Actions are done for reasons. But do actions and their mental causes also have descriptions that do not involve reasons? Various considerations can make it seem that human mental events must be biochemical events. Paul Pietroski, however, defends a non-Cartesian form of dualism. Actions and their rationalizing causes belong to an autonomous mental domain-although this autonomy is compatible with the supervenience of the mental on the non-mental. On this view, some bodily motions have rationalizing causes distinct from any biochemical causes; Pietroski argues that this is not an objectionable form of overdetermination. Central to his account is his proposed treatment of ceteris paribus laws, their role in explanation, and how such laws are related to singular causal claims. Pietroski also connects these issues to semantic questions arising from discussions of action reports and belief ascriptions. All philosophers interested in mind or causation will be intrigued by his new theory.

Synopsis The Non-Existence of God by : Nicholas Everitt

Is it possible to prove or disprove God's existence? Arguments for the existence of God have taken many different forms over the centuries: in The Non-Existence of God, Nicholas Everitt considers all of the arguments and examines the role that reason and knowledge play in the debate over God's existence. He draws on recent scientific disputes over neo-Darwinism, the implication of 'big bang' cosmology, and the temporal and spatial size of the universe; and discusses some of the most recent work on the subject, leading to a controversial conclusion.

Synopsis Metaphysics and Mystery by : Thomas Dean

Metaphysics and Mystery: The Why Question East and West is a critical analysis, comparison, and evaluation of philosophical answers, Western and Asian, to the question “Why is there something rather than nothing?” The question, first posed by the seventeenth-century philosopher Leibniz, was reintroduced in the twentieth century by Heidegger. Volume 1 begins with an introduction that lays out the issues raised by the why question. It then analyzes contemporary Western philosophers who provide either cosmological-metaphysical or existential-ontological answers to the question. It also considers transitional answers that bridge the two. Volume 2 examines Asian philosophers, classical and contemporary, who, though rejecting the assumptions behind the question, put forward nondualist answers that have a direct bearing on it. It concludes with an argument for a revised understanding of the why question that draws on the strengths and weaknesses of these Western and Asian philosophies and explores implications for ethics and religious thought.

Synopsis Seven Statements from the Christian Bible that Jews Should Know by : Alfredo Calderon-Rodriguez

We know that, from the fields of politics, economics, culture and social affairs, different motives have emerged for the rejection of some Jewish communities in some nations, but why from Christianity? Is Christianity a monolithic bloc from which these expressions of rejection came out, and has anyone who considers himself a Christian also participated in them, at least in his conscience? Or is Christianity a broad field of thought, one that goes beyond forming a single dogmatic culture in its believers? Fortunately, we know that universal Christianity is not that solid block of thinking. So, for the same reasons why we know that not all politicians, societies, cultures, economies, or religions have been, or are anti-Semitic; neither is the universal of Christianity. For Christians, of virtually every denomination, the Bible is their ultimate teaching book. It is the book whose content has all the information necessary to direct our lives. But why are there so many divisions in the Christian faith? Worse still, why are there different versions of that Christian Bible, even though they contain the basic biblical books? Will the Bible have the answer to this and other questions regarding the inclusion of Christianity in anti-Semitism behave? In this book we will try to find the answer to these questions and see what the Christian Bible has to tell us about it. In this work called: Seven Statements from the Christian Bible that the Jews should know, we try to scrutinize the pages and message contained in the pages of the Bible, hoping to find the information that will help us better understand this complicated matter.

Synopsis Mystery 101 by : Richard H. Jones

Offering readers much to ponder, Richard H. Jones approaches the "big questions" of philosophy such as the nature of reality, consciousness, free will, the existence of God, and the meaning of life not by weighing the merits of leading arguments in these debates, but instead by questioning the extent to which we are even in a position to answer such questions in the first place. Regardless of continuous technical and even groundbreaking advances in knowledge, there will always be gaps in what we can fully understand. Distinguishing true mysteries from problems yet to be solved but within the scope of our intellectual grasp, Jones provides a penetrating and high-level overview of the scope and limits of scientific and philosophical inquiry.
