In his new book Doron Mendels addresses the topic of the authority of texts and their transmission, as well as different strategies of narration in ancient texts. Mendels provides extensive treatment of issues such as linearity, emporality and simultaenity of texts, whilst working to examine four core themes. First, the narrator and his strategies in the historiography of the Hellenistic period. Secondly, Jewish Historical thought in the Hellenistic period and beyond. Thirdly, issues of Hellenization in Palestine - power, honour, gifting, etiquette and sovereignty and their presentation in the main narrative of the Hasmonean period. Finally Mendels gives attention to the 'split' in the Jewish diaspora between east and west, as exemplified from a Christian point of view, it is this that unites these themes into a sustained examination of Jewish historical narrative and thought.

Does East Go West? examines the study of post-socialism from an anthropological perspective. These social systems have posed a challenge to anthropological theory that has been the subject of lively exchanges for over 20 years now. Can post-socialism as a concept adequately apply to the current situation in Eastern Europe? One of the answers proposed here is that specific elements derived from postcolonial studies may prove very useful in analyzing Eastern Europe's post-socialist countries. In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt planned a tour of the mid-West and Western states. It was dubbed the “Great Loop Tour,” being careful not to call it a campaign tour, although he intended to seek re-election the following year. Theodore was adamant that his speeches be devoid of any partisan rhetoric, nor would he meet solely with Republican office holders in the various cities and towns he planned to visit. He would happily shake hands with a Democratic mayor or Senator just as he would a Republican. Theodore’s speeches, which he wrote himself, covered subjects of good citizenship, a square deal for every man, a strong navy, and the positive aspects of the recent irrigation bill he signed into law. Then there were his speeches relating to conservation of the land, forests, rivers, and wildlife. Nowhere did these subjects become more important to him than when he visited Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. While he was still three years away from having the law that would knight him as the “Conservation President,” Theodore was already making his mark on preserving the country’s resources.

The book China - Go - West Strategy. Development or Subjugation? The Economic Impact of Modernization on Tibetan Culture and Society is based on field research to investigate the economic impact of the China - GO - West - Strategy on Tibetan culture and society. There is a scientific consideration of three modernization projects in the context of the China - GO - West Strategy: Modernization of the Old Lhasa / Qinghai - Tibet - Railway / Dams - Yarlung Tsangpo River. These three modernization projects are described and analyzed under the scientific perspective of Development Studies and Economic. This is complemented by qualified interviews with Chinese and Tibetan people. For the first time, this field research allows a comprehensive scientific perspective on the economic, cultural and social effects of the China - GO - West - Strategy in Tibet.
