This book, drawn from the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), aims to help readers conduct quantitative analysis of international trade issues in an economy-wide framework. In addition to providing a succinct introduction to the GTAP modeling framework and data base, this book contains seven of the most refined GTAP applications undertaken to date, covering topics ranging from trade policy, to the global implications of environmental policies, factor accumulation and technological change.

This book presents the technical aspects of an economic model used to examine issues of global economic significance, such as the impact on the world economy of changes in trade and environmental policy. The book provides a number of studies using the model to examine trade reform, growth and investment, climate change, natural resources, technology, and demographic change and migration.

Due to the general complementary convex structure underlying most nonconvex optimization problems encountered in applications, convex analysis plays an essential role in the development of global optimization methods. This book develops a coherent and rigorous theory of deterministic global optimization from this point of view. Part I constitutes an introduction to convex analysis, with an emphasis on concepts, properties and results particularly needed for global optimization, including those pertaining to the complementary convex structure. Part II presents the foundation and application of global search principles such as partitioning and cutting, outer and inner approximation, and decomposition to general global optimization problems and to problems with a low-rank nonconvex structure as well as quadratic problems. Much new material is offered, aside from a rigorous mathematical development. Audience: The book is written as a text for graduate students in engineering, mathematics, operations research, computer science and other disciplines dealing with optimization theory. It is also addressed to all scientists in various fields who are interested in mathematical optimization.

The main topic of the volume is to develop efficient algorithms by which one can verify Artin's conjecture for odd two-dimensional representations in a fairly wide range. To do this, one has to determine the number of all representations with given Artin conductor and determinant and to compute the dimension of a corresponding space of cusp forms of weight 1 which is done by exploiting the explicit knowledge of the operation of Hecke operators on modular symbols. It is hoped that the algorithms developed in the volume can be of use for many other problems related to modular forms.

This book treats an important set of techniques that provide a mathematically rigorous and complete error analysis for computational results. It shows that interval analysis provides a powerful set of tools with direct applicability to important problems in scientific computing.
