Synopsis Belt and Road Initiative China's Global Business Footprint by : Chris Bellamy
Ever since the rapid growth of China, the prevailing global unipolar economic order has started tilting toward a bi-polar economic order. In this context, China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever conceived. Launched in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the vast collection of development and investment initiatives would connect Eurasia and pave the way for a revival of the old silk road in the process. The costs of the BRI are estimated to be US$ 800 billion, unsurprisingly China is the biggest investor supported by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the New Development Bank (NDB) both headquartered in China. The plan is to create "six international economic corridors" connecting the Eurasia region. The edited book Belt and Road Initiative China's global business footprint encompasses various facets of this proposed trade initiative. It includes perspectives from different parts of the world while applying contextual lenses. Further, the book provides a comprehensive overview for practitioners, academics, and politicians on BRI in terms of (1) related fields of interest; (2) China and its relationship with its neighbours; and (3) political and economic effects of this initiative.

Synopsis Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship by : Jean-Pierre Jeannet
This open access book focuses on Switzerland-based medium-sized companies with a longstanding export tradition and a proven dominance in global niche markets. Based upon in-depth documentation and analysis of 36 Swiss companies over their entire history, an expert team of authors presents several parallels in the pathways and success factors which allowed these firms to become dominant and operate from a high-cost location such as Switzerland. The book enhances these insights by providing detailed company profiles documenting the company history, development, and how their relevant global niche positions were reached. Readers will benefit from these profiles as they compile a diverse selection of industries, mainly active within the B2B sector, with mostly mature companies (60 years to older than 100 years since founding) and different types of ownership structures including family firms. ‘Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship’ brings unique learning opportunities to owners and leaders of SMEs in Switzerland and elsewhere. Findings are based on detailed bottom-up research of 36 companies -- without any preconceived notions. The book is both conceptual and practical. It fosters understanding for different choices in development pathways and management practices. Matti Alahuhta, Chairman DevCo Partners, ex-CEO Kone, Board member of several global listed companies, Helsinki, Finland Start-up entrepreneurs need proven models from industry which demonstrate the various paths to success. “Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship” provides deep insights highlighting these models and the important trade-offs entrepreneurial teams must consider when choosing the path of high growth or of maximum control, as they are often mutually exclusive. Synopsis Re-Entrepreneuring by : Charles-Edouard Bouée
Re-entrepreneuring shows how organizations must re-invigorate entrepreneurial spirit at all levels to create new value and stay ahead in turbulent times. It has long been assumed that, in the development of any organization, the time for entrepreneurial activity is right at the beginning. Once an organization is established, qualities that were virtues in the organization's start-up and early stages can become vices, and the entrepreneurial founders must cede control to professional managers who can nurture the fruits of their original vision more efficiently. One unintended consequence of this assumption is that large, established organizations tend to be entrepreneur-free zones. Entrepreneurial thinking is tacitly discouraged because it can create novelty, and novelty is a threat to established organizations with large market shares. Re-entrepreneuring argues that organizations must revive the entrepreneurial out-look of their founders in order to survive in today's market. In an organization that encourages and nurtures an entrepreneurial outlook, everyone has the potential to unleash their inner entrepreneur and bring new and dynamic ways of thinking into their work environment. It has more to do with the ways of thinking encouraged by the organizational culture than by any inherent differences in talent or aptitude. The solution presented in this new book from ROLAND BERGER, edited by Charles-Edouard Bouée and Stefan Schaible, is piecemeal yet targeted 're-entrepreneuring'. With the help of international case studies and first-hand testimony from business leaders, the authors show how the entrepreneurial approach can be applied to any organization and at all levels, in order to spark innovation, remove operational obstacles and – ultimately – to create new value.

Synopsis Footprints by : David Hilton-Barber
This book is a story of success, of the triumph of man over a wilderness; of the triumph of science over disease; of the conversion of a Valley of Death into a paradise. It tells of the shaping of one of the cornerstones of South Africa from a stone which the earlier builders not only rejected, but found an almost insurmountable obstacle. It tells of men and women of all races, principally Boer, Briton and Hollander, toiling against great odds, some for sheer love of adventure, some for wealth or personal advantage, some with a true desire for the common weal; of some who came and shortly went their ways elsewhere; of many who closed their lives here in a twilight of apparently hopeless failure; of some few who lived through the later stages of travail and of hardship to see at last, 'The stubborn thistle bursting into glossy purples, richer than the most voluptuous garden roses'. Each and all of these men and women of the past did their bit, great or small, consciously or unconsciously, with objects of self or of the common good, towards the shaping of the Stone, but the Great Architect could and did combine those individual efforts to the shaping of the things to come; none could foresee how great would be the eventual victory over the inimical forces of Nature, how great would be the use to which future generations would put the generous gifts of Nature in this Region of ours[: the Lowveld]. --H.S. Webb, first president of the Lowveld Regional Development Association, in his preface to The South-Eastern Transvaal Lowveld published in 1954.

Synopsis The Water Footprint Assessment Manual by : Maite M. Aldaya
People use lots of water for drinking, cooking and washing, but significantly more for producing things such as food, paper and cotton clothes. The water footprint is an indicator of water use that looks at both direct and indirect water use of a consumer or producer. Indirect use refers to the 'virtual water' embedded in tradable goods and commodities, such as cereals, sugar or cotton. The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the individual or community or produced by the business. This book offers a complete and up-to-date overview of the global standard on water footprint assessment as developed by the Water Footprint Network. More specifically it: o Provides a comprehensive set of methods for water footprint assessment o Shows how water footprints can be calculated for individual processes and products, as well as for consumers, nations and businesses o Contains detailed worked examples of how to calculate green, blue and grey water footprints o Describes how to assess the sustainability of the aggregated water footprint within a river basin or the water footprint of a specific product o Includes an extensive library of possible measures that can contribute to water footprint reduction
