This volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium organized by the Getty Conservation Institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum. The first conference of its kind in twenty years, the symposium assembled an international group of conservators of painted panels, and gave them the opportunity to discuss their philosophies and share their work methods. Illustrated in color throughout, this volume presents thirty-one papers grouped into four topic areas: Wood Science and Technology, History of Panel-Manufacturing Techniques, History of the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings, and Current Approaches to the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings.

This volume provides a striking account of the life, destruction, rediscovery, and cultural significance of the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum and one of its grandest residences—the House of the Bicentenary. This volume vividly recounts, for general readers, the Roman town of Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE and uniquely preserved for nearly two thousand years. Initial chapters offer an engaging historical overview of the town during antiquity, including the riveting story of its rediscovery in the eighteenth century, excavation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and broad cultural significance in modern times. Subsequent chapters offer an interpretive tour of the ancient town, then focus on one of Herculaneum’s grandest and most beautifully decorated private residences, known as the House of the Bicentenary. Located on the town’s main street, it has a range of features—original rooms, magnificent wall paintings and mosaics, and remarkable documents—that illuminate daily life in the ancient world. Final chapters bring the story up to date, including recent discoveries about the site and its famous papyrus manuscripts, as well as ongoing conservation initiatives.

The most lavishly decorated tomb in ancient Egypt was constructed for Queen Nefertari, wife of Rameses the Great. The Getty Conservation Institute has been instrumental in the effort to restore the tomb’s magnificent wall paintings, and in the fall of 1992, to mark the project’s completion, an exhibition was held at the Getty Museum. The exhibition included a model of the tomb and full-scale reproductions of the wall paintings. The publication describes the conservation work (including before and after photographs), outlines the life of Nefertari, and places the tomb in the context of Egyptian art history.

This publication is the result of a symposium organized by the GCI and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 1987. Because the conservation of wall paintings requires an interdisciplinary approach, the purpose of the symposium was to facilitate the exchange of information among international conservators, scientists, and historians involved in major wall paintings conservation projects. The interdisciplinary nature of contemporary wall paintings conservation is reflected in this volume which contains the symposium's papers. The Sistine Chapel, the Brancacci Chapel, and the Tomb of Nefertari are among the well-known wall paintings discussed in this book by international experts in wall paintings conservation.
