This book examines the cross-cultural adaptation experiences of international scholars working at Shanghai’s top public research universities. On the basis of in-depth interviews, it comprehensively assesses the organisational culture of Chinese universities, recurring problems in international scholars’ cross-cultural adaptation processes, and the coping strategies they employ in response. The book focus on the real lives and working experiences of international scholars in China, and addresses teaching, research, funding applications and organisational politics. Accordingly, it offers a wealth of first-hand information for readers who are interested in the Chinese academic world, especially those scholars/researchers/expatriates currently working in or planning to visit/work in China.

This is an open access book.The 4th International Conference on Literature, Art and Human Development (ICLAHD 2022) was successfully held on October 28th-30th, 2022 in Xi’an, China (virtual conference). ICLAHD 2022 brought together academics and experts in the field of Literature, Art and Human Development research to a common forum, promoting research and developmental activities in related fields as well as scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, and engineers working all around the world.We were honored to have Assoc. Prof. Chew Fong Peng from University of Malaya, Malaysia to serve as our Conference Chair. The conference covered keynote speeches, oral presentations, and online Q&A discussion, attracting over 300 individuals. Firstly, keynote speakers were each allocated 30-45 minutes to hold their speeches. Then in the oral presentations, the excellent papers selected were presented by their authors in sequence.

This book presents a mixed-methods study that explores the development of intercultural competence among local Chinese students in Chinese universities, using Deardorff’s process model of intercultural competence as a theoretical framework. In the global higher education context, “internationalization at home” is significant in (re)shaping educational practices, especially under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chinese higher education is also actively engaged in domestic internationalization. Specifically, this book explores the factors that influence Chinese students’ development of intercultural competence and their understanding of it in the context of internationalization at local Chinese universities. The findings suggest that many universities in China are trying to improve domestic students’ intercultural competence through various strategies, such as foreign language learning, extracurricular intercultural communication activities, and international cooperation programs. Notably, the effects are diverse. Based on these findings, this book also discusses the potential theoretical, practical, and policy implications. This book will be an excellent resource for students and scholars in comparative and international education, student development, cultural studies, Chinese studies, and those interested in Chinese higher education.

What happens when East travels West? In today’s increasingly globalized world, these collisions are becoming increasingly common in universities– especially due to the growth of migratory students . As the largest international population studying abroad in the world, Chinese students’ learning experience in an intercultural environment calls for more attention. This book covers an array of problems common to Chinese students studying abroad and explores how these students academically adjust to an intercultural environment. It also highlights how they familiarize themselves with the education system, ranging from the types of courses, academic tasks and examinations to the structure of the education as a whole in the host country, as they negotiate the gulf between academic expectations at home versus those in the host university environment and communicate with domestic lecturers and students.

Our 10th Anniversary series features special essays from influential voices in the field who explore future directions for internationalization and student mobility, as well as the experiences of new generations of international students in less researched contexts and the need for more critical perspectives. Our 10th anniversary cover art celebrates the past ten years with an image of the Holi Festival of Colors celebrated around the world, including Nepal, the birthplace of our Founding & Executive Editor, Dr. Krishna Bista. The image is overlaid with the name of the journal in various languages to celebrate our authors and readers who span the globe, as well as our plans to publish future special issues in the many languages of our readers, similar to our recent Special Issue on International Students in China with full-length articles in Simplified Chinese. This issue features research and authors in Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Lebanon, Malaysia, the Philippines, Portugal, and South Africa.

One consequence of China’s economic growth has been a massive increase in migration, both internal and external. Within China millions of rural workers have migrated to the cities. Outside China, many Chinese have migrated to other parts of the world, their remittances home often having a significant impact within China. Also, China’s increasing links to other parts of the world have led to a growth in migration to China, most interestingly recently migration from Africa. Based on extensive original research, this book examines a wide range of issues connected to Chinese migration.

This book examines the settlement space of special communities in China on the community scale from an interdisciplinary approach that combines perspectives from urban planning and sociology. Using the framework of integration response, it theoretically and empirically explores the approaches these communities adopt to survive and evolve. Empirically, this discussion centers on four particular groups, namely international students, land-lost peasants, ethnic minorities, and migrant workers, and offers an analysis of their settlement spaces from different perspectives. Theoretically, this study optimizes the logic of one-way integration as used in classical theories. By constructing a two-way linkage in the theoretical framework of integration response, it provides a multi-scenario interpretation and summary of the laws of survival and evolution that govern the urban settlements of special communities in China. This study conforms to the major transformations that China has undergone in the concepts, models, and orientation of its development since the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. Furthermore, it renders profound research value and bears practical significance for the adjustment and management of urban spatial patterns in China, social care for marginalized groups, and the construction of a harmonious and moderately prosperous society. This study provides valuable reference for educators, researchers, and management personnel across various fields, including urban planning, geography, and sociology.
