Synopsis Human-System Integration in the System Development Process by : National Research Council

In April 1991 BusinessWeek ran a cover story entitled, "I Can't Work This ?#!!@ Thing," about the difficulties many people have with consumer products, such as cell phones and VCRs. More than 15 years later, the situation is much the same-but at a very different level of scale. The disconnect between people and technology has had society-wide consequences in the large-scale system accidents from major human error, such as those at Three Mile Island and in Chernobyl. To prevent both the individually annoying and nationally significant consequences, human capabilities and needs must be considered early and throughout system design and development. One challenge for such consideration has been providing the background and data needed for the seamless integration of humans into the design process from various perspectives: human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, training, safety and health, and, in the military, habitability and survivability. This collection of development activities has come to be called human-system integration (HSI). Human-System Integration in the System Development Process reviews in detail more than 20 categories of HSI methods to provide invaluable guidance and information for system designers and developers.

Synopsis Threat and Violence Interventions by : James S. Cawood

Threat and Violence Interventions: The Effective Application of Influence evaluates threat and violence risk for various levels of mental health practitioners, law enforcement officers, security professionals, human resource professionals, attorneys, and academics in forensic psychology, sociology, criminology and law. Currently, both empirical and practical literature has focused, to an almost exclusive extent, on the assessment of human behavior and propensity for violence. However, most cases of high concern for potential physical violence arise from individuals who have yet to act in ways the criminal justice system can address. This book broaches the topic, exploring tactics and providing practical, concrete suggestions. - Focuses on how to influence specific outcomes relating to high risk behaviors - Analyzes the biological, psychological, sociological, contextual and environmental information learned from risk assessment - Concentrates on a specific area of analysis and/or techniques

Synopsis Applied Crime Analysis by : Wayne Petherick

Most approaches to crime analysis focus on geographical crime mapping, which is helpful in identifying crime clusters and allocating police resources, but does not explain why a particular crime took place. Applied Crime Analysis presents a model that brings statistical anchoring, behavioral psychopathology, and victimology from the social sciences together with physical and crime scene evidence to provide a complete picture of crime. This hands-on guide takes theoretical principles and demonstrates how they can be put into practice using real case examples. In addition to covering key topics such as staged crime scenes, false reports, and criminal motivations, the book's includes a final chapter on report writing, showing readers how to use their findings to successfully advance to prosecution and succeed in court. - Presents a model that takes social science concepts, including statistical anchoring, behavioral psychopathology, and victimology and connects them with crime scene evidence to examine and analyze crime - Puts crime analysis theory into practice with real-world examples highlighting important concepts and best practice - Includes a report writing chapter to demonstrate how this approach can strengthen criminal cases and succeed in court - Instructor materials include a Test Bank, Powerpoint lecture slides, and Instructor's Guide for each chapter

Synopsis NATO, Security and Risk Management by : M.J. Williams

This new volume explores the crisis in transatlantic relations and analyses the role of NATO following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book offers a unified theory of cooperation in the new security paradigm to explain the current state of transatlantic relations and NATO’s failure to adequately transform itself into a security institution for the 21st century. It argues that a new preoccupation with risk filled the vacuum left by the collapse of the Soviet Union, and uses the literature of the Risk Society to analyse the strained politics of the North Atlantic community. Using case studies to show how the West has pursued a strategy of risk management, and the effect this has had on NATO’s politics, the book argues that a better understanding of how risk affects Western political cohesion will allow policy makers a way of adapting the structure of NATO to make it more effective as a tool for security. Having analysed NATO’s recent failings, the book offers a theory for the way in which it can become an active risk manager, through the replacement of its established structure by smaller, ad hoc groupings.
