Synopsis Applications and Theory of Petri Nets 2001 by : Jose-Manuel Colom

This volume contains the proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Application and Theory of Petri Nets. The aim of the Petri net conferences is to create a forum for discussing progress in the application and theory of Petri nets. Typically, the conferences have 100{150 participants { one third of these coming from industry while the rest are from universities and research institutions. The conferences always take place in the last week of June. This year the conference was organized jointly with the 2nd International Conference on Application of Concurrency to System Design (ICACSD 2001). The two conferences shared the invited lectures and the social program. The conference and a number of other activities are co-ordinated by a steering committee with the following members: G. Balbo (Italy), J. Billington (Aust- lia), G. De Michelis (Italy), C. Girault (France), K. Jensen (Denmark), S. - magai (Japan), T. Murata (USA), C.A. Petri (Germany; honorary member), W. Reisig (Germany), G. Rozenberg (The Netherlands; chairman), and M. Silva (Spain). Other activities before and during the 2001 conference included tool dem- strations, a meeting on \XML Based Interchange Formats for Petri Nets", - tensive introductory tutorials, two advanced tutorials on \Probabilistic Methods in Concurrency" and \Model Checking", and two workshops on \Synthesis of Concurrent Systems" and \Concurrency in Dependable Computing". The tu- rial notes and workshop proceedings are not published in these proceedings, but copies are available from the organizers.

Synopsis Lectures on Petri Nets II: Applications by : Wolfgang Reisig

The two-volume set originates from the Advanced Course on Petri Nets held in Dagstuhl, Germany in September 1996; beyond the lectures given there, additional chapters have been commissioned to give a well-balanced presentation of the state of the art in the area. Together with its companion volume "Lectures on Petri Nets I: Basic Models" this book is the actual reference for the area and addresses professionals, students, lecturers, and researchers who are - interested in systems design and would like to learn to use Petri nets familiar with subareas of the theory or its applications and wish to view the whole area - interested in learning about recent results presented within a unified framework - planning to apply Petri nets in practical situations - interested in the relationship of Petri nets to other models of concurrent systems.

Synopsis Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems by : Christoforos N. Hadjicostis

Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems describes coding approaches for designing fault-tolerant systems, i.e., systems that exhibit structured redundancy that enables them to distinguish between correct and incorrect results or between valid and invalid states. Since redundancy is expensive and counter-intuitive to the traditional notion of system design, the book focuses on resource-efficient methodologies that avoid excessive use of redundancy by exploiting the algorithmic/dynamic structure of a particular combinational or dynamic system. The first part of Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems focuses on fault-tolerant combinational systems providing a review of von Neumann's classical work on Probabilistic Logics (including some more recent work on noisy gates) and describing the use of arithmetic coding and algorithm-based fault-tolerant schemes in algebraic settings. The second part of the book focuses on fault tolerance in dynamic systems. Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems also discusses how, in a dynamic system setting, one can relax the traditional assumption that the error-correcting mechanism is fault-free by using distributed error correcting mechanisms. The final chapter presents a methodology for fault diagnosis in discrete event systems that are described by Petri net models; coding techniques are used to quickly detect and identify failures. From the Foreword: "Hadjicostis has significantly expanded the setting to processes occurring in more general algebraic and dynamic systems... The book responds to the growing need to handle faults in complex digital chips and complex networked systems, and to consider the effects of faults at the design stage rather than afterwards." George Verghese, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Coding Approaches to Fault Tolerance in Combinational and Dynamic Systems will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners in the area of fault tolerance, systems design and control.

Synopsis Logic Synthesis for Asynchronous Controllers and Interfaces by : J. Cortadella

This book is the result of a long friendship, of a broad international co operation, and of a bold dream. It is the summary of work carried out by the authors, and several other wonderful people, during more than 15 years, across 3 continents, in the course of countless meetings, workshops and discus sions. It shows that neither language nor distance can be an obstacle to close scientific cooperation, when there is unity of goals and true collaboration. When we started, we had very different approaches to handling the mys terious, almost magical world of asynchronous circuits. Some were more theo retical, some were closer to physical reality, some were driven mostly by design needs. In the end, we all shared the same belief that true Electronic Design Automation research must be solidly grounded in formal models, practically minded to avoid excessive complexity, and tested "in the field" in the form of experimental tools. The results are this book, and the CAD tool petrify. The latter can be downloaded and tried by anybody bold (or desperate) enough to tread into the clockless (but not lawless) domain of small-scale asynchronicity. The URL is http://www.lsi. upc. esr j ordic/petrify. We believe that asynchronous circuits are a wonderful object, that aban dons some of the almost militaristic law and order that governs synchronous circuits, to improve in terms of simplicity, energy efficiency and performance.
