Synopsis Botticelli Past and Present by : Ana Debenedetti

The recent exhibitions dedicated to Botticelli around the world show, more than ever, the significant and continued debate about the artist. Botticelli Past and Present engages with this debate. The book comprises four thematic parts, spanning four centuries of Botticelli’s artistic fame and reception from the fifteenth century. Each part comprises a number of essays and includes a short introduction which positions them within the wider scholarly literature on Botticelli. The parts are organised chronologically beginning with discussion of the artist and his working practice in his own time, moving onto the progressive rediscovery of his work from the late eighteenth to the turn of the twentieth century, through to his enduring impact on contemporary art and design. Expertly written by researchers and eminent art historians and richly illustrated throughout, the broad range of essays in this book make a valuable contribution to Botticelli studies.

Synopsis Potsdamer Platz by : Malgorzata Nowobilska

The redesign of Potsdamer Platz depicts the struggle to revive Berlin, Germany. This central and highly visible square has undergone a series of strategic revisions to restore its vitality and so to meet place-enhancing objectives. Specifically, the book critically addresses the challenging tasks of restoring Potsdamer Platz from a state of disintegration to a condition worthy of a world-class city, although the questions remain unanswered as to how far the objectives have been achieved. The book enables readers to become familiar with the various stages of transformation, aided by the authors’ hand-drawn illustration – a series of sketches accompanied by narrations focusing on how to critically read ‘cities in transformation’. As a whole, it presents an overview of the strategic process of urban regeneration. The findings from this theoretical exploration help reposition our understanding of the process of re-making a ‘city in decay and transition’; and introduces new strands of regeneration ideologies, politics and methods.

Synopsis The Villa Laurentina of Pliny the Younger in an Eighteenth-century Vision by : Jerzy Miziołek

"The book deals with a paper reconstruction of Pliny the Younger' s (c. AD 61-112) villa near Ostia, some twenty kilometres from Rome. This unique work was created in Rome in the years 1777-78 by a young Pole, Count Stanisław Potocki (1755-1821) in cooperation with Giuseppe Manocchi and other outstanding artists of the time. The work, originally in the Potocki collection in Wilanów, is today housed in the iconographic collection of the National Library, Warsaw. It contains over thirty large-format drawings (57.789.5 cm) in colour. Just before the close of the 18th century, probably during his last sojourn in Italy (1795-97), Count Potocki wrote a 24-page-long commentary to his work, entitled Notes et Idées sur la Villa de Pline. This hitherto unpublished manuscript commentary and reconstruction drawings of the villa are now published together with a virtual visualisation of the villa produced in 3D Studio Max 2014."--

Synopsis The Analogous City by : Aldo Rossi

This new publication of The Analogous City, an artwork produced by Aldo Rossi, Eraldo Consolascio, Bruno Reichlin and Fabio Reinhart for the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 1976, is part of a museographic installation for the exhibition Aldo Rossi - The Window of the Poet at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. To gauge and explore this seminal work, Archizoom relied on Dario Rodighiero, candidate on the Doctoral Programme for Architecture and Sciences of the Cities, and designer at the Digital Humanities Lab (DHLAB) at EPFL. Conceived as a genuine urban project, The Analogous City displays an aggregation of architectures drawn from collective and personal memories. What happens if we isolate the forms that Aldo Rossi and his friends so consciously placed in relation to each other? Rodighiero simply decomposed it into the original references and then returned the pieces to the artwork, thus allowing us to simultaneously see the work and its visual vocabulary. An application based on augmented reality has been created to work in tandem with this publication by displaying the complete references belonging to the collage on different layers suspended over the artwork. By downloading the free application and installing it on your tablet or mobile phone, you can recreate the interaction of the museum installation whenever and wherever you are.

Synopsis The Urban Fact by : Kersten Geers

The Urban Fact examines Aldo Rossis formulation of a theory of the city, developed over the period of roughly ten years, from Architecture of the City published in 1966, to Analogous City exhibited in 1976. Rossis theory is not taken as an abstract argument, but is seen through his work from that period. A careful selection of twenty-three projects is presented here at face value. These projects, bound by the reality of their setting, but also charged with cultural and civic ambition, illustrate the intricacy of an architectural project as a complex 'whole'. They also demonstrate how architecture could contribute to the changing urban context of the field, hinting at an oeuvre painfully aware of its limitations and stubborn in its intentions.
