Synopsis Advanced Technologies and Polymer Materials for Surgical Sutures by : Sabu Thomas
Polymeric materials offer a high level of versatility due to the range of applications possible within the biomedical and clinical fields – including wound closure - particularly in comparison to metals or ceramics. These specialised materials also allow for a diverse array of therapeutic effects. Although there have been advances in improving polymeric materials for surgical sutures, there is little information available regarding improving the therapeutic value of sutures, and advanced technologies used to implement this improvement. Advanced Technologies and Polymer Materials for Surgical Sutures provides thorough coverage on suture materials with improved mechanical and therapeutic properties that can improve quality of life; chapter topics include drug-releasing kinetics of sutures, shape memory polymer sutures and future trends. This book is a useful resource for academics and researchers in the materials science and biomedical engineering fields, as well as professionals in biomaterials and biotextiles development and clinicians looking to learn more about suture material properties and suture/body interactions. - Depicts recent advances in both the therapeutic effects of polymer-based sutures, as well as the various manufacturing techniques employed in the production of sutures - Offers an interdisciplinary approach, covering material properties and engineering technologies, as well as an understanding of the biological properties of sutures, such as suture/body interactions - Comprehensive coverage allows both experienced researchers in the area and new entrants (such as clinicians) to learn more about this important topic

Synopsis Aging and Durability of FRP Composites and Nanocomposites by : Arya Uthaman
The usage of composites is a broad and growing area of scientific research, especially in developed and developing countries. These materials are used in a broad range of applications in both structural and civil engineering sectors. In many of these applications FRPs are exposed to one or more environmental influences, so they need to be designed to meet durability requirements to withstand even the harshest of environments. Aging and Durability of FRP Composites and Nanocomposites focuses on the latest developments in durability and long-term ageing studies of composite materials especially for those used in civil and structural engineering applications. The book will be a valuable reference resource for materials scientists and engineers who want to learn more about the long-term service life and durability behaviour of composites under different environmental conditions. - Discusses composites and polymer nanocomposites - Reviews different types of aging processes and degradation mechanisms in composites - Covers different types of accelerated aging tests - Presents theory, modeling, and simulation studies of aged composites and nanocomposites - Looks at recent trends and future possibilities

Synopsis Textbook on Scar Management by : Luc Téot
This text book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. Written by a group of international experts in the field and the result of over ten years of collaboration, it allows students and readers to gain to gain a detailed understanding of scar and wound treatment – a topic still dispersed among various disciplines. The content is divided into three parts for easy reference. The first part focuses on the fundamentals of scar management, including assessment and evaluation procedures, classification, tools for accurate measurement of all scar-related elements (volume density, color, vascularization), descriptions of the different evaluation scales. It also features chapters on the best practices in electronic-file storage for clinical reevaluation and telemedicine procedures for safe remote evaluation. The second section offers a comprehensive review of treatment and evidence-based technologies, presenting a consensus of the various available guidelines (silicone, surgery, chemical injections, mechanical tools for scar stabilization, lasers). The third part evaluates the full range of emerging technologies offered to physicians as alternative or complementary solutions for wound healing (mechanical, chemical, anti-proliferation). Textbook on Scar Management will appeal to trainees, fellows, residents and physicians dealing with scar management in plastic surgery, dermatology, surgery and oncology, as well as to nurses and general practitioners

Synopsis Biotextiles as medical implants by : C.C. Chu
Catgut and collagen are the two most well-known natural materials for absorbable sutures; however collagen-based absorbable sutures have largely been replaced by synthetic materials made from one of five basic building blocks. The chemical structures of a variety of commercial absorbable sutures are reviewed. The characteristics, chemistry and manufacture of some nonabsorbable equivalents are also considered. A number of newly available materials, in particular the group of amino-acid based biodegradable poly(ester amide) fibers, are considered, together with the results of trials.
