Synopsis First & Second Kings- Everyman's Bible Commentary by : Robert Hubbard

By the waters of Babylon, in the sixth century B.C., the Jewish people felt like permanent refugees in a foreign land. Israel had undergone captivity once before, in Egypt. This time the people were in exile because of disobedience. The books of 1 and 2 Kings were meant as an antidote for the sorrow of heart that afflicted their souls. Robert L. Hubbard, Jr. guides you through the maze of kings and empires, prophets and priests, that are the subjects of those two Old Testament historical books. In those books, Hubbard says, are "peaks of unbelievable glory and valleys of unforgettable despair." His study of 1 and 2 Kings and of the chaotic time chronicled in those books is written in a comfortable style but with scholarly care. Hubbard applies to our lives today the lessons learned through years of pain. Scholar and layman alike will appreciate the combination of readability and scholarly investigation that marks this book.

Synopsis Numbers- Everyman's Bible Commentary by : Irving Jensen

This passage-by-passage commentary incorporates charts and a simple outline in its exposition of an important Old Testament book. The events of Numbers form the story of the Israelites traveling from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land. Sometimes called 'the book of journeyings' or 'the book of murmurings,' Numbers contains many significant lessons for God's people today. Dr. Jensen points out many pertinent applications of these lessons in this study, as well as explaining the history of the Israelites. "Its arrangement is commendable—it could serve as a marvelous guide for home study of the Bible or for group study. The outline before each section is well chosen and interwoven in the body of the material." — Derward W. Deere, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary

Synopsis Haggai, Zechariah 1-8 by : Carol L. Meyers

Haggai and Zechariah 1-8, Volume 25B in the acclaimed Anchor Bible part of the Scripture known as the Minor Prophets, were written during a critical period in Israel's history, the momentous return of the Jews from Babylonian exile. Following the conquest of Babylon by the Persian Empire, the Israelites sought to reestablish their ethnic and religious legacy in Judah. This was a time of profound turmoil and uncertainty, and Haggai and Zechariah provided a crucial measure of support and inspiration. They rallied Israel's energies and exhorted their fellow countrymen to heed the word of God. Under their guidance the Jews restored the Temple at Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar. Together the two prophets guided Israel through an important transitional epoch, and reconciled the influences of Persia's dominion with the sacred traditions of the Hebrew people. In this illuminating new translation and commentary, Carol and Eric Meyers consider the Book of Haggai and the first eight chapters of the Book of Zechariah in a linguistic, social, and historical context. They underscore the literary artistry, the political acumen, and the prophetic authority of these fascinating volumes that proved so vital to the survival of Israel and the preservation of the Jewish faith.

Synopsis On Zechariah by : R. J. Plugge

God symbolically showed Zechariah the Ten Commandments covering the promised land, and He warned of consequences. [Zec.5.3] They apply to us today too. Zechariah looked forward to a day when the exiled returnees would say. Let us go at once to entreat the Lord and seek the Lord Almighty. [8.21] They did. [Neh.8] We need to seek Him too! Zechariah foresaw the Lord would be King over the entire world. [Zec.14.9] He is!! We know Him as Jesus, Israels promised Messiah. [Mt.16.16] Within the Book of Zechariah, God declared Him my shepherd [Zec.13.7]; the man who is close to me[13.7]; my servant [3.8]; the stone with 7-eyes [3.9]; and the Branch [3.8]. Zechariah spoke of Him as the word of the lord [1.1]; the angel of the lord [1.11]; my lord [4.4]; and Jerusalems king [9.9]. The world needs to take note! He is Lord and King now! [1Cor.1.2; 1Pe.2.10; Rev.19.16] Zechariah was a prophet, priest, and pretype for Jesus. He provided verifications for Jesus being the promised Messiah. God knows the end from the beginning. [e.g. Dan.2; 9; Isa.46.10; Rev.21.6] History has verified the visions given Daniel. But the words given to Zechariah through preincarnate Jesus, especially within the Oracle on Israel [12.1-14.21], are still in the process of being confirmed. [e.g. 13.9; 14.16, 20] This commentary on the Book of Zechariah is like no other. That book has been reprinted with interpretations for its pronouns and symbols inserted to reduce the frequent arbitrariness of interpretations often imposed. Millennial concepts and eschatological models are questioned. Even a suggested calendar day for Christs return is included. Many will undoubtedly take issue.
