Synopsis World of Resorts by : Chuck Y. Gee
"In the case of classic hotels, development and management funcitons are generally treated as separate subjects. Resorts are different. The resort business is built on the fulfillment of dreams and desires, while classic hotels focus on necessity and convenience in serving business travelers. Resort development is not a one-time activity, ending with the opening of the resort, but is rather an ongoing process and a planning responsibility of management on behalf of ownership. The variables of a resort are many. A resort's products go beyond the simple provision of lodging, food, and beverage - although these hospitality basics must not only be provided, but given special attention by resorts. Each variable - type and scope of resort, location, seasonlity, range of recreation and amenities, forms of ownership, and other development-related aspects - will have a significant effect on the work of management. Becuase resorts cater to the leisure traveler, whose wants are diverse and fluid, so management must constantly keep abreast of emerging trends that shape guest preferences and create market appeal. Continual reinvestment in the resort plant or investment into new ROI projects is the price of competition in the resort world. Successful resorts, whether a single resort estate or an entire destination, remain perpetual works in progress. Managers who understand the development process will have greater appreciation of the reinvestment costs required to keep a resort attractive enough to retain current guests and gain new ones"--Page xiii

Synopsis The Gumbo Coalition by : Marc Morial
Learn key lessons on diversity and inclusion from front-line expert Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans. Marc Morial knew his calling from a young age was to be a leader in the fight for meaningful change. Growing up in the segregated South and helping his father realize an incredible victory as the first African American mayor of New Orleans, Morial was shown that significant change is possible. Less than two decades later in his own mayoral race in New Orleans, Morial built what he christened the “Gumbo Coalition,” an incredible mixture of all of New Orleans’s ingredients--African Americans, Whites, Latinos, Asians, business leaders, grassroots community activists, business leaders, clergy, and more. Each ingredient brought its own flavor, creating a dish that was able to reduce crime and rebuild New Orleans’s reputation with such power that the city successfully attracted an NBA franchise, multiple Super Bowls, and the Essence Festival, the largest African American event in the nation. Now, Morial fights on behalf of the National Urban League to create a community with a voice so strong that nothing can stand in the way of change. He is ready to teach others what he has learned along the way, by showing readers what it means to be a leader who can unite voices and create meaningful change.

Synopsis A Hospitable World? by : David Jordhus-Lier
The hospitality and tourism sector is a large and rapidly expanding industry worldwide, and can rightfully be described as a vehicle of globalisation. Hotels are among the cornerstones of the industry often drawing workers from the most vulnerable segments of multicultural labour markets, accommodating and entertaining tourists and business travelers from around the world. This book explores the organisation of work, worker identities and worker strategies in hotel workplaces, as they are located in heterogeneous labour markets being changed by processes of globalisation. It uses an explicitly geographical approach to understand how different groups of workers experience and respond to challenges in the hospitality industry, and is based on recent theoretical debates and empirical research on hotel workplaces in cities as different as Oslo, Goa, London, Las Vegas and Toronto. A multi-scalar analysis is taken where concrete worker bodies and their physical, emotional and embodied labour are seen in relation to, among other aspects: the regulation of national and regional labour markets, city governments with global city ambitions, and global corporate actors and labour migration patterns. The book sheds light on the hotel workplace as a hierarchical and fragmented social space as well as addressing questions on worker mobility, the fragmentation of work, scales of organisation and how workers can help shape the regulation of their industry. This timely volume brings together contributions from international academics and is valuable reading for all those interested in hospitality, tourism, human geography and globalisation.
