This wide-ranging collection of previously published articles by Raymond Vernon reflects a portion of the diverse subjects on which he has worked during his career. In the past 20 years, the author has pioneered the study of two major economic institutions which have played important roles in today's global economy: the multinational corporation and the state-owned enterprise. The unprecedented economic, political, and social changes that have followed the east European revolutions of late 1989 rank among the epochal events of the twentieth century. Partners in East-West Economic Relations: The Determinants of Choice covers the proceedings of an international conference of the same name held at Montebello, Quebec on April 26-29, 1978. This conference brings together various professionals to address contemporary international economic relations issues. One of the three major issues tackled in this compilation is the reintegration of the economics of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe into the international division of labor. This compendium also studies the determinants of the choice of partners in East-West relations at the national and subnational levels. The last major topic concerned in this selection is the similarities and differences between partnerships in the East-West and North-South contexts. Managing Trade Relations in the New World Economy analyses the implications of the new world economy for global trade. Thomas Andersson explores how manufactured exports have increased exponentially while the western economies have accrued massive current account deficits. Warning against the dangers of protectionism, he argues that the future of the world trading system, may depend upon the external policies of the EC.
