Synopsis Work Stronger by : Pete Leibman

As author and high performance coach Pete Leibman demonstrates in this eye-opening book, stronger hours (not longer hours) are the key to feeling and performing your best over the long term. Work Stronger provides a step-by-step, science-based approach for increasing your energy, decreasing your stress, and taking your performance to a higher level. This book also features practical tips and powerful insights from private interviews that Leibman conducted with more than twenty-five prominent leaders. The group includes Chip Bergh, the president and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co., Dick Costolo, the former CEO of Twitter, and Janine Allis, an investor on Shark Tank. You’ll learn how to form stronger habits in four key areas (nutrition, exercise, focus, and renewal) that are highly correlated with greater health, well-being, and performance. You can also get a free assessment of your current habits, and you can download a free copy of The Work Stronger Workbook at WorkStronger.com.

Synopsis Reducing and Redistributing Unpaid Work: Stronger Policies to Support Gender Equality by : Cristian Alonso

Unpaid work, such as caring for children, the elderly, and household chores represents a significant share of economic activity but is not counted as part of GDP. Women disproportionately shoulder the burden of unpaid work: on average, women do two more hours of unpaid work per day than men, with large differences across countries. While much unpaid care work is done entirely by choice, constraints imposed by cultural norms, labor market features or lack of public services, infrastructure, and family-friendly policies matter. This undermines female labor force participation and lowers economy-wide productivity. In this paper, we examine recent trends in unpaid work around the world using aggregate and individual-level data, explore potential drivers, and identify policies that can help reduce and redistribute unpaid work across genders. Conservative model-based estimates suggest that the gains from these policies could amount to up to 4 percent of GDP.

Synopsis The Work of the Future by : David H. Autor

Why the United States lags behind other industrialized countries in sharing the benefits of innovation with workers and how we can remedy the problem. The United States has too many low-quality, low-wage jobs. Every country has its share, but those in the United States are especially poorly paid and often without benefits. Meanwhile, overall productivity increases steadily and new technology has transformed large parts of the economy, enhancing the skills and paychecks of higher paid knowledge workers. What’s wrong with this picture? Why have so many workers benefited so little from decades of growth? The Work of the Future shows that technology is neither the problem nor the solution. We can build better jobs if we create institutions that leverage technological innovation and also support workers though long cycles of technological transformation. Building on findings from the multiyear MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future, the book argues that we must foster institutional innovations that complement technological change. Skills programs that emphasize work-based and hybrid learning (in person and online), for example, empower workers to become and remain productive in a continuously evolving workplace. Industries fueled by new technology that augments workers can supply good jobs, and federal investment in R&D can help make these industries worker-friendly. We must act to ensure that the labor market of the future offers benefits, opportunity, and a measure of economic security to all.

Synopsis Stronger by : Dinesh Palipana

A puddle of water on a highway changed Dinesh Palipana's life forever. Halfway through medical school, Dinesh was involved in a catastrophic car accident that caused a cervical spinal cord injury. After his accident, his strength and determination saw him return to complete medical school - now with quadriplegia. Dinesh was the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland, and the second person with quadriplegia to graduate medical school in Australia. Despite all of the pain and hardship he's faced, Dinesh now sees his accident as a turning point for the better in his life. He believes it has made him a better doctor, with a better grasp of the concerns and fears of his patients, and a more sensitive, open human. He fights for equal and equitable access for disabled people, and is a compassionate and skilled doctor working in one of Australia's busiest hospitals. After everything he's been through, Dinesh believes he is now happier, stronger and more capable than he was before the accident. It helped him to clarify what is important in his life, and taught him that happiness and strength can always be found within. Praise for Stronger: 'Dinesh's spirit of positivity and his love of life is astonishing. Thoughtful, powerful and moving, Stronger is an exemplar of resilience' - Dr Richard Harris 'Dinesh Palipana is an incredible leader who has challenged the limits of mindset and belief. His contribution to Australia will be felt for generations.' - Kurt Fearnley

Synopsis Stronger Than a Hundred Men by : Terry S. Reynolds

Like many apparently simple devices, the vertical water wheel has been around for so long that it is taken for granted. Yet this "picturesque artifact" was for centuries man's primary mechanical source of power and was the foundation upon which mills and other industries developed. Stronger than a Hundred Men explores the development of the vertical water wheel from its invention in ancient times through its eventual demise as a source of power during the Industrial Revolution. Spanning more than 2000 years, Terry Reynolds's account follows the progression of this labor-saving device from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and America-covering the evolution of the water wheel itself, the development of dams and reservoirs, and the applications of water power.

In Fitter Stronger – Resilience – If You're Going Through Hell, Keep Going, she explains her story in full. With nutrition hacks and work outs for all abilities, there are contributions from clinical experts and those who have used fitness to turn their lives around, including chef Michel Roux Jr and former Royal Marine and triple amputee Mark Ormrod OBE - called 'Britain's answer to Superman' by Prince Harry. This book identifies the vital coping mechanisms we all need when a grenade is thrown into our world and we need to adapt to survive. Carefully researched and beautifully presented, this is a practical guide to managing adversity, by creating a strong, healthy, mind and body. Paula Kerr was a successful journalist when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, after a routine operation. Fitter Stronger has grown into a hugely successful brand, including personal training, wellness breaks in the UK and South Africa, NHS and private medicine rehab clinics, and a youth fitness and motivation programme for primary, secondary and further education. In all areas of her work, she promotes exercise and nutrition as vital tools for a peaceful, healthy and energetic life. 'If you keep your mind and body strong, you are unstoppable.' – Paula Kerr
