Women are at the heart of civil society organizations (CSOs) that challenge oppressive practices at a local and global level and develop outstanding entrepreneurial activities. Yet CSO research tends to ignore considerations of gender, and the rich history of activist feminist organizations is rarely examined. This collection corrects that oversight, exploring the nexus between the emancipation of women and their roles in CSOs. Featuring contrasting, international studies from a wide range of contributors, it covers emerging issues such as the role of social media in organizing, the significance of religion in many cultural contexts, activism in Eastern Europe, and the impact of environmental degradation on women's lives. In Women's Activism and Feminist Agency in Mozambique and Nicaragua, Jennifer Leigh Disney investigates the contours of women’s emancipation outside the framework of liberal democracy and a market economy. She interviews 146 women and men in the two countries to explore the comparative contribution of women’s participation in subsistence and informal economies, political parties and civil society organizations. She also discusses military struggles against colonialism and imperialism in fostering feminist agency to provide a fascinating look at how each movement evolved and how it changed in a post-revolutionary climate.

The Woman From Obscurity to the Wings of Change This book is all about the woman. God created the woman when he saw and said, "It is not good that the man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18). God was not satisfied, at a stage, with the performances of Adam alone in the garden of Eden. God therefore created the woman for fruitfulness and to unveil hidden knowledge, wisdom, and procreation in fulfillment of God's blessings and wishes for his creation on earth. The men on earth became jealous and suspicious of the woman because of her nature and qualities. The early religious leaders, family heads, the community leaders, authors and Bible writers, the governments in the Middle East, and society in general made laws and culture aimed at demeaning and downplaying the woman's qualities and contributions. They veiled the woman to obscurity in the land. Centuries later, women passed through changes toward emancipation as a result of pressure by feminist groups, government and civil society agencies in developed and civilized countries who made legislations and edicts prohibiting discrimination and gender inequality laws against women. Several women and men organizations in cooperation with government-initiated activities and made laws aimed at abolishing all kinds of gender discrimination in their nations. As a result of these laws, women became not just educated, but they became educators in various fields of science and technology. Highflier women became professors, doctors, engineers, pilots, political leaders, heads of states, and industrial leaders in their nations. Today's women are on the wings of change. They now compete with men all over the world. Women are becoming more equal to men than expected. Many men are confused and are looking up to the women highfliers for direction.

Focusing on three important interrelated issues, Women and Civil Society in Turkey challenges the classical definition, developed in the West, of civil society as an equivalent of the public sphere in which women are excluded. First it shows how feminist movements have developed a new definition of civil society to include women. Second it draws attention to the role of women in the modernization of Turkey with special reference to the debate on the possibility of an indigenous feminist movement. Finally, it underlines the contribution of feminist, Islamic and Kurdish women’s movements in the transition from an ideologically constructed, uniform public sphere to a multi-public domain. Giving attention to the influence of diverse women’s movements over Turkish political values this book sheds light into the issue of how a feminine civil society has been constructed as part of a plural public space in Turkey. Ömer Çaha argues that this new public realm is the product of values and institutions which have been developed by diverse women’s groups who have succeeded in eliminating the traditional barricades between public and domestic spheres and in steering women into public life without sacrificing their own values.

The relationship between the family and civil society has always been complex, with the family often regarded as separate from, or even oppositional to, civil society. Taking a fresh empirical approach, Muddiman, Power and Taylor reveal how such separation underestimates the important role the family plays in civil society. Considering the impact of family events, dinner table debates, intergenerational transmission of virtues and the role of the mother, this enlightening book draws on survey data from 1000 young people, a sample of their parents and grandparents, and extended family interviews, to uncover how civil engagement, activism and political participation are inherited and fostered within the home.

Opening with an historical account of differing facets of women's action for emancipation, this book goes on to look at more recent examples of diverse resistance: women fighting for environmental and reproductive rights, mobilizing against poverty and racism, fighting the inequalities imposed by structural adjustment programmes, and campaigning for human rights.
