In this book, women's organization PILIPINA chronicles the stories of 19 women — wives, mothers, daughters, among others — who were left behind by the drug-related killings. "The women in our stories have become part of a new underclass among the urban poor: ostracized and isolated by their neighbors, threatened by barangay officials and their loved ones’ murderers, vulnerable to sexual exploitation by police and drug lords and their own kin. But they are also actively dealing with their situation, taking charge of their own lives and those of their families."

The story of low-wage workers rising up around the world to demand respect and a living wage. Tracing a new labor movement sparked and sustained by low-wage workers from across the globe, “We Are All Fast-Food Workers Now” is an urgent, illuminating look at globalization as seen through the eyes of workers-activists: small farmers, fast-food servers, retail workers, hotel housekeepers, home-healthcare aides, airport workers, and adjunct professors who are fighting for respect, safety, and a living wage. With original photographs by Liz Cooke and drawing on interviews with activists in many US cities and countries around the world, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mexico, South Africa, and the Philippines, it features stories of resistance and rebellion, as well as reflections on hope and change as it rises from the bottom up.

In 2018, the International Center for Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov) and the De La Salle University – Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance (DLSU–JRIG), both members of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN), came up with two reports that examined the case of populism in the Philippines. INCITEGov focused on civil society’s responses to President Duterte’s populist leadership, while JRIG on the utilization of social media for populist agenda. The two papers are part of ADRN’s State of Democracy in Asia (SODA) Report. The findings of the two reports were presented and validated during the National Consultation on Populism in the Philippines, a multi-sectoral forum organized by INCITEGov and JRIG on Sept. 13, 2018. The activity also aimed to analyze the challenges posed by populism and identify possible action points; expand the scope of action-oriented and policy-driven research; and forge linkages among democracy practitioners in promoting, consolidating, and deepening democracy. This publication contains the proceedings of the forum and is divided into three sessions: 1) Understanding Populism in the Philippines; 2) Populism and Social Media; and 3) Populism and Civil Society. The first session explores the concept of populism using the economic and gender lenses, and from the perspective of the populist public. JRIG and INCITEGov’s reports were presented in the second and third sessions, respectively, each followed by further insights from a panel of reactors and an open forum.

Beginning in December 2019, the coronavirus swept quickly through all regions of the world. COVID 19 has wreaked social, political and economic havoc everywhere and has shown few signs of entirely abating. The recent development and approval of new vaccines against the virus, however, now provides some hope that we may be coming to the beginning of the end of the pandemic. This volume collects papers from a conference titled Economic Dimensions of COVID 19 in Indonesia: Responding to the Crisis, organised by the Australian National University’s Indonesia Project and held online 7–10 September 2020. Collectively, the chapters in this volume focus for the most part on the economic elements of COVID 19 in Indonesia. The volume considers both macro- and micro-economic effects across a variety of dimensions, and short- and long-term impacts as well. It constitutes the first comprehensive analysis of Indonesia’s initial response to the crisis from an economic perspective.

This monograph has two parts: (1) a paper on the impact of populism on gender equality in the Philippines, written by INCITEGov chairperson Teresita Quintos Deles in December 2018; and (2) the two speeches that she delivered before the Subcommittee on International Human Rights (SDIR) of the Canadian House of Commons in April and July 2019, respectively. INCITEGov presents this monograph in a three-part series: Populism in the Philippines. Up to this date of publication, September 2020, the political force of populism examined in these papers remains and persists to erode the foundation of democratic rights and gender equality. This series of papers serve to bring insights to the discourse on populism and momentum for enlightened citizens to reclaim hard-won democratic rights.

In this book feminist scholars from a range of areas including international law, rights, citizenship, queer theory, constitutional law and migration studies bring fresh perspectives to gender and human rights. By relating women's international human rights to broader debates about feminism, rights and international society, this collection of essays both provides a sophisticated introduction to gender and human rights and offers a variety of fresh theoretical perspectives and methods.

EveryWoman, a coalition of women’s organizations and formations (currently numbering 11), combined with individual women affiliates and backed up by a FaceBook Page (with more than 100,000 followers), was formally organized in August, 2017, for the purpose of defending democracy and upholding women’s rights and dignity at a time when these are under severe attack not only in the Philippines but globally. We had come together, cutting across diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, professional, ideological, and generational backgrounds, to propel organized pushback against the further erosion of civic (also civil) space and of the status and rights that Filipino women have fought hard to attain and have won over the years. As such, our actions in the past years have tended towards the loud and dramatic – in the streets, in public fora, in stinging public statements, often joining our voice with those of our allied Hubs in Tindig Pilipinas. A book had no space in our crowded blueprint for 2020. But then the COVID-19 pandemic happened. As with everyone else, EveryWoman’s world was turned upside down. Needing to get back our bearings – personally, organizationally, politically – we started discussions to try to understand the situation better, including the nature of this global health crisis, how it was affecting different aspects of our national life, how it was especially reshaping women’s lives on the ground, how government was responding (or not), the role of the private sector and other institutions, the plight of ordinary citizens. We probed our own areas of work and engagement. We invited friends and colleagues where we needed help. We saw it to be our responsibility to continue to surface and strengthen women’s perspectives and agency in these difficult and extraordinary times. And, thus, this book was born, emerging from every woman talking to each other and claiming our space to speak up and be heard, intent to make a difference – especially since we saw no women at the frontlines of the national task force set up by the President to respond to the crisis.
