E-mail to the author by the translator Date: Tue, 10 May 2011 16:23:56 +0100 From: Alessandra Baroni Subject: Re: Ermanno Capelli-Yo Yo Denti di Lupo To: Ermanno Capelli Hello Ermanno, what a pleasure to receive your e-mail! I completed the translation just a few days ago, and now I'm careful revising it to avoid any oversight. When I came into contact with Laura, she brought two books to be translated: I had to choose between yours and another novel. I just read the first pages to decide, I was so excited that I could not wait to start work. I think it took me less than five minutes to tell her my choice! I loved your novel! The more I kept on reading the more I got completely involved in it. The novel, through its irony and its grotesque, can pass important messages, without ever becoming banal, indeed! I must say that I had a lot of fun translating Yo Yo Denti di Lupo. It was a truly pleasure rather than a work. I had the good fortune to spend a year living in the States. This experience has been very helpful in translating your novel, especially for the use of slang and street language, which unfortunately are not taught at the University ... but on the other hand, they are becoming increasingly popular. Really, congratulations for your work and I'm waiting for the next one ... Now, I am a fan of yours! Thanks for the good wishes. A hug Alessandra

Synopsis Hunting and Fishing in the New South by : Scott E. Giltner

This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.
