Synopsis Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources by : International Atomic Energy Agency

This publication is the new edition of the International Basic Safety Standards. The edition is co-sponsored by seven other international organizations European Commission (EC/Euratom), FAO, ILO, OECD/NEA, PAHO, UNEP and WHO. It replaces the interim edition that was published in November 2011 and the previous edition of the International Basic Safety Standards which was published in 1996. It has been extensively revised and updated to take account of the latest finding of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, and the latest recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. The publication details the requirements for the protection of people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation and for the safety of radiation sources. All circumstances of radiation exposure are considered.

Synopsis Cell Death by : Csaba Szabo

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), also termed poly (ADP-ribose) synthetase (PARS) is a nuclear enzyme with a wide range of functions, including regulation of DNA repair, cell differentiation, and gene expression. More than a decade after the identification of PARP-like enzymatic activities in mammalian cells, a novel role was proposed for this e

Synopsis by : Kerry Crofton

"Radiation Rescue: 4 steps to safeguard your family from the other inconvenient truth the health hazards of wireless technology" Prominent physicians and eminent scientists around the world are raising the alarm about the adverse health effects of wireless technology cell phones, PDAs, wireless Internet access, headsets and more. Most assume that if something is on the market it must be safe. Surely, this wireless technology was pre-market tested before we flooded our homes, offices, schools and cities? No, it was not tested for safety and now leading scientists have the proof: it is not. And the government standards we rely on to protect us are out-dated and not relevant to this type of exposure their safe levels have been shown to cause biological harm. Nor is there any government or industry post-market surveillance to monitor adverse health effects. People of all ages rely on these increasingly high-powered devices. Its not only business people, as it was not that long ago. Parents provide their young children with cell phones believing it ensures their safety. Young adults most have never had a corded landline chat and/or text endlessly with pals around the country. On-the-go soccer moms tap away on their PDAs while waiting for the children. Many parents installed wireless baby monitors to keep their infants safe. It is crucial that these consumers be informed, that they know the proven dangers, and the proven solutions. To protect our families, to save our health, we dont have to give up the high-tech gadgets we rely on, and love; we do need to use them differently. K. Crofton shows us how in "Radiation Rescue." In clear, easy-to-understand language K. Crofton gives readers the details, tools, coaching and resources they need to assess, prevent, and heal from the electro-magnetic radiation exposure that surrounds us all. An engaging narrative style will be consistent throughout the book, with technical information, references, research, and preventive measures for the healthy population. Interventions of value are also provided for people with related symptoms, and peer-reviewed studies and clinical protocols are referenced for their doctors. This informal, interactive style written in scientifically accurate yet non-technical language - is well suited to readers of all ages.

Synopsis Biological Dosimetry by : W. G. Eisert

In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-mar row stem cells or spermatogonia.

Synopsis The Sweetness of a Simple Life by : Diana Beresford-Kroeger

The author of The Global Forest--an international bestseller and a classic upon publication, beloved by readers around the world--gives us her tips and advice for achieving better health and peace of mind, with frugality, simplicity and pleasure not far behind. In The Sweetness of a Simple Life, Diana Beresford-Kroeger mixes science with storytelling, wonderment, magic, myth and plenty of common sense. Orphaned at an early age, Beresford-Kroeger was raised by elderly relatives in Ireland in the Druidic tradition, taught the overlap between the arts and sciences, and the triad of body, mind and spirit. After pursuing a PhD in medical biochemistry, Beresford-Kroeger set out on a quest to preserve the world's forests. In this warm and wise collection of essays, she gives us a guide for living simply and well: which foods to eat and which to avoid; how to clean our homes and look after pets; how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from illness; and why we need to appreciate nature. She provides an easy dose of healing, practical wisdom, blending modern medicine with aboriginal traditions. This inspiring, accessible book emphasizes back to basics, with the touchstone not an exotic religion or meditation practice, but the natural world around us.
