This is the model list and clearing house of appropriate, basic, and priority medical devices based on the list of clinical interventions selected from clinical guidelines on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, monitoring, and end of life care. This publication addresses medical devices that can be used for the management of cancer and specifically describes medical devices for six types of cancer: breast, cervical, colorectal, leukemia, lung, and prostate. This book is intended for ministries of health, public health planners, health technology managers, disease management, researchers, policy makers, funding, and procurement agencies and support and advocacy groups for cancer patients.

The final goal of this publication is to guide on the selection of medical devices. This increases access to medical devices required to prevent, diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases (including stroke) and diabetes, especially in low and middle resource settings. This publication is intended for Ministries of Health, public health planners, health technology managers, disease managers, researchers, policy-makers, funding and procurement agencies, and support and advocacy groups for patients suffering from cardiac diseases, stroke and diabetes. It serves to inform policy-makers and technical decision-makers on the selection of medical devices required for the package of benefits and interventions for a target population in the context of universal health coverage.

Rare diseases collectively affect millions of Americans of all ages, but developing drugs and medical devices to prevent, diagnose, and treat these conditions is challenging. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends implementing an integrated national strategy to promote rare diseases research and product development.

Though cancer was once considered to be a problem primarily in wealthy nations, low- and middle-income countries now bear a majority share of the global cancer burden, and cancer often surpasses the burden of infectious diseases in these countries. Effective low-cost cancer control options are available for some malignancies, with the World Health Organization estimating that these interventions could facilitate the prevention of approximately one-third of cancer deaths worldwide. Effective cancer treatment approaches are also available and can reduce the morbidity and mortality due to cancer in low-resource areas. But these interventions remain inaccessible for many people in the world, especially those residing in low-resource communities that are characterized by a lack of fundsâ€"on an individual or a societal basisâ€"to cover health infrastructure and care costs. As a result, worse outcomes for patients with cancer are more common in low- and middle-income countries compared with high-income countries. Few guidelines and strategies for cancer control consider the appropriateness and feasibility of interventions in low-resource settings, and this may undermine the effectiveness of care. Recognizing the challenges of providing cancer care in resource constrained settings, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine developed a two- workshop series examining cancer care in low-resource communities, building on prior work of the National Academies. The first workshop, held in October 2015, focused on cancer prevention and early detection. The second workshop was held in November 2016, and focused on cancer treatment, palliative care, and survivorship care in low-resource areas. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions of this workshop.

This framework document is a “how-to” guide for policy-makers and programme managers to effectively implement the CureAll pillars and enablers. It provides justification for action, posits priority interventions and proposes a monitoring framework. Key components needed to establish, scale up and sustain a well-functioning national childhood cancer programme are explained.The scope of this framework document is centrally defined by the programmes, services and policies that support children with cancer in the context of the health system. For the Initiative, children are defined as those aged 19 years or younger. Childhood cancer care requires cross-cutting strategies, such as workforce training, that often have overlap with broader child health and/or cancer control programmes. These synergies are highlighted and considered in scope for the Initiative and for an integrated response in childhood cancer control. The primary audience for this framework document are policy-makers, cancer control programme managers and hospital managers at the country level. Additional key stakeholders may also find the information in this guide beneficial, including clinicians, parent groups, civil society, academia and interested parties in the private sector. The survey results provide an understanding of the landscape of the inclusion of cancer care along the path to universal health coverage (UHC). This survey determines what countries included in their largest public- sector HBPs in terms of types of cancer, screening services, cancer treatments (with particular emphasis on cancer medicines), and palliative and survivorship care. The findings of the report strengthen the need for greater support for cancer-care planning and delivery, to continue progress towards UHC.
