Synopsis When Soldiers Cried by : David Shea

By the summer of 1967, the nation's Selective Service System was fueling the largest military build-up since World War II. Hundreds of thousands of young men, many too young to legally drink and vote, were inducted to wage an ill-fated war in Vietnam. Written as a narrative history, this story is a lasting tribute to those who answered the call and paid the ultimate sacrifice in the face of improbable odds.

Synopsis Who Will Cry For The Soldiers? Tears From Distant Wars by : International War Veterans Poetry Archives

An Anthology of Modern War Poetry and Prose written by contributors (veterans, veterans families, and supporters) to the International War Veterans Poetry Archives (IWVPA). This book is dedicated to the Men and Women of the Armed Forces of the Free World who have been, are now, and will be placed in harm's way. For many of those who find it difficult to come to terms with personal war experiences, whether it is first hand or as a loved one or friend, writing is almost like a magical pill. Within the structured framework of the written word, emotions can be haltered and led to a point where the writer is enabled to manifest and relate to the gamut of emotions engendered by the experiences and consequences of war.

Synopsis A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries by : Kaylie Jones

A girl comes of age in Paris with her expatriate family—and struggles with sibling rivalry—in a “delightful” novel that “captures the essence of childhood” (Library Journal). Based on the author’s life with her famous father, novelist James Jones, A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries tells the story of Channe Willis, who happily lives with her parents in Paris. But when they adopt a French boy named Benoit—ending Channe’s only-child status—her idyllic world is disrupted, and the relationships among this unusual family turn volatile. The basis for a Merchant Ivory film, this is a “discerning, brightly written” novel about love and loss (Library Journal). “Although we’ve gotten used to second-generation actors equaling or surpassing the accomplishments of their parents, the same hasn’t happened with second-generation novelists. Nonetheless there are a few . . . and added to their small number ought to be Kaylie Jones.” —The New York Times “Every page is a joy.” —Sue Harrison, Self Magazine Includes a new introduction by the author and a previously unpublished chapter

Synopsis When a Soldier Cries the World Weeps Poetry by : CI, Katerena Veronica, Katerena Lovett MHS,SSD, CI

The service men of the Viet Nam war we called called baby killers and murderers and other horrible names. It was also the time of the draft dodgers that ran across the border to Canada to get off American soil to prevent them from being drafted. As their buses pulled into their home towns they were covered with paper and if you wore your uniform you and your family was shunned like a child molester. No one wanted to hire a Viet Nam Veteran and yet these were young men fresh out of high school to get drafted and sent to fight a war they were barely old enough to understand and not even old enough to drink. Many ay young men that had problems with h law were luckier than the Viet Nam Veterans as they almost always came home, had a job when they got out housing to stabilize them and three hots and a cot in an environment that was controlled at the expense of the taxpayers and no guns going off or fellow Soldiers dying to protect us for value of the the Red, White and Blue.

Synopsis Nanjing Never Cries by : Hong Zheng

Set in the city of Nanjing during the time of the Sino-Japanese war (1937–1945), this novel tells the story of four people caught up in the violence and tumult of these years: John Winthrop and his MIT classmate, the brilliant Chinese physicist Calvin Ren (Ren Kewen); Judy, Calvin's Chinese-American wife; and the beautiful and determined young woman Chen May. John and Calvin take up positions at Nanjing's National Central University and collaborate on a top-secret project to design and build warplanes to enable the Chinese to defend themselves against Japanese bombers. Meanwhile, John enjoys his new life in Nanjing. He helps the lovely May with her English, falling a little in love with her; he shops for antiques; meets with Chiang Kai-Shek and Madame Chiang; and once attends an evening's entertainment at one of Nanjing's notorious Wine Houses. But when the Japanese invade, there is no safe place in the city. The Japanese murder, torture, and rape indiscriminately. (The invasion and occupation were described by the historian Iris Chang as “the forgotten holocaust.”) May sees her own family killed; John works in a shelter for women and children; Calvin's family flees the city while Calvin, weakened by overwork, stays behind to work on the warplane project. Each tries to survive against the odds. May vows to hunt down the soldier who murders her father. When the war is over, she finds him sweeping Nanjing streets as a war prisoner. The story then ends with the force of an explosion. Vivid and disturbing, Nanjing Never Cries offers a compelling story of the horror of war and the power of love and friendship.

Synopsis Good Soldiers Don't Cry by : Darren Roberts

The loneliness and isolation we find ourselves in can be overwhelming and debilitating, it's not something we can stoic away in staged instagram pictures and moody soundbites. Creating a new tribe, network and emotional fabric to rely on was incredibly hard but also vital. The people who can make up your circle are there, just be open to who it is.⠀If you can do that, if you can take that step, get past the outrageously toxic veteran community and look at who actually helped when it mattered - they're your people. They're your real brothers and sisters, not the fake 'we're here for you' wankers on social media who won't help beyond a hashtag.⠀ Your circle is out there, waiting for you.⠀ I think these books have been that journey, are still that journey - whether I realised that when I started them or not. I have no idea where the original idea came from to have 3 books in a series, I'd love to say there was some grand over-arching plan but that would be a lie. It was New Years day 2019 when I announced to no one in particular that I was going to curate a book by veterans to help veterans. I wasn't really thinking much past the first book, then somehow this has all morphed into a series of 3. In my mind I knew the book shouldn't be read in a linear way, you don't need to start at the beginning, which became none of the books need to be read in any order or on any particular page. You should be able to pick them up and read whatever and wherever you happen to land on, and take from that what you can - which is hopefully 'something'. Is the last Veteran Collective book? Never say never, it's certainly the last in this 'series' lets say. 3 books out there which are hopefully doing the rounds helping someone, somewhere, somehow is more than I could have ever imagined. There's plenty of other people now getting their story out there, and the more that do can only be a good thing. No one is coming, it's up to us. Maybe that's what it's always been about, never alone. Nunquam Solus
