Synopsis Western Medical Review by : George H. Simmons

Excerpt from Western Medical Review: Vol I, May to December, 1896; Vol II, January to December, 1897 In this brief paper I desire to call attention to recent progress in the examinations of blood in disease, in its bearing particularly on diagnosis, prognosis. And treatment. On a visit to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, less than a year ago, I was impressed with the importance given this subject, and interested to note the scientific precision, not only in the diagnosis of diseases in which blood examinations have an important place, but also in determining the probability of complications, the influence on prognosis, and the indications in treatment. Synopsis The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery, 1846, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint) by : Daniel Drake

Excerpt from The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery, 1846, Vol. 6 On the morning of the 17th I amputated the arm by the circular Operation about two inches above the elbow joint. He recovered in a reasonable time without any unfavorable symptoms. The stump was a bad one in consequence of a redundancy of integuments. Case II. - A negro man, 30 years of age, has had a large ulcer of many years' standing, causing swelling of the foot and leg from a short distance below the knee to twice the natural size. It causes him much pain and constitutional disturbance, and seems incurable, as numerous and continued efforts have been made for that purpose. He was a patient Of Dr. Holt, at whose request, January 3oth, 1841, I amputated the leg a short distance below the knee, by a modification of the circular Operation, leaving the skin and mass Of muscles forming the calf of the leg consider ably longer than the integuments anteriorly.
