Synopsis Wendell Castle by : Emily Evans Eerdmans
A founder and icon of the Studio Furniture movement, the popular sculptor and furniture designer Wendell Castle (born 1932) has carved a distinct path over nearly six decades of a distinguished career. This long-awaited and richly illustrated record of his oeuvre, "Wendell Castle: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1958-2012," beautifully delivers a worthy homage to his talents. From Castle's earliest, mid-century works through to his unabashedly forward-thinking experiments with unconventional materials (gel-coated fiberglass and metallic automobile paint, for example) and his latest signature wood laminations, the common thread that ties these diverse pieces together is Castle's knack for uniting appealing function with biomorphic elegance. Castle's pieces are widely collected and his works feature in the permanent collections of more than 40 museums and cultural institutions around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); Museum of Modern Art (New York); Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.); Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal (Quebec, Canada); and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Three essays supplying varying perspectives introduce the catalogue raisonné and substantial back matter is included.

Synopsis The Shape of Green by : Lance Hosey
Does going green change the face of design or only its content? The first book to outline principles for the aesthetics of sustainable design, The Shape of Green argues that beauty is inherent to sustainability, for how things look and feel is as important as how they’re made. In addition to examining what makes something attractive or emotionally pleasing, Hosey connects these questions with practical design challenges. Can the shape of a car make it more aerodynamic and more attractive at the same time? Could buildings be constructed of porous materials that simultaneously clean the air and soothe the skin? Can cities become verdant, productive landscapes instead of wastelands of concrete? Drawing from a wealth of scientific research, Hosey demonstrates that form and image can enhance conservation, comfort, and community at every scale of design, from products to buildings to cities. Fully embracing the principles of ecology could revolutionize every aspect of design, in substance and in style. Aesthetic attraction isn’t a superficial concern — it’s an environmental imperative. Beauty could save the planet.

Synopsis Iron Sunrise by : Charles Stross
“[Stross] has the ability to superimpose an intriguing take on contemporary events over an imaginative story peopled by bizarre characters.” – The Kansas City Star A G2 star doesn’t just explode—not without outside interference. So the survivors of the planet Moscow, which was annihilated in just such an event, have launched a counterattack against the most likely culprit: the neighboring system of New Dresden. Synopsis Stone Soup by : Marcia Brown
Three soldiers came marching down the road towards a French village. The peasants, seeing them coming, suddenly became very busy, for soldiers are often hungry. So all the food was hidden under mattresses or in barns. There followed a battle of wits, with the soldiers equal to the occasion. Stone soup? Why, of course, they could make a wonderful soup of stones...but, of course, one must add a carrot or two...some meat...so it went. Marcia Brown has made of this old tale a carnival of activity, dancing, and laughter. Children who have once heard the story will turn to this book again and again, retelling the story for themselves. Now in an eBook edition!

Synopsis Thinking Through Craft by : Glenn Adamson
This book is an introduction to the way that artists working in all media think about craft. Workmanship is key to today's visual arts, when high 'production values' are becoming increasingly commonplace. Yet craft's centrality to contemporary art has received little serious attention from critics and historians. Dispensing with clichéd arguments that craft is art, Adamson persuasively makes a case for defining craft in a more nuanced fashion. The interesting thing about craft, he argues, is that it is perceived to be 'inferior' to art. The book consists of an overview of various aspects of this second-class identity - supplementarity, sensuality, skill, the pastoral, and the amateur. It also provides historical case studies analysing craft's role in a variety of disciplines, including architecture, design, contemporary art, and the crafts themselves.
