Synopsis Web Proxy Cache Replacement Strategies by : Hala ElAarag

This work presents a study of cache replacement strategies designed for static web content. Proxy servers can improve performance by caching static web content such as cascading style sheets, java script source files, and large files such as images. This topic is particularly important in wireless ad hoc networks, in which mobile devices act as proxy servers for a group of other mobile devices. Opening chapters present an introduction to web requests and the characteristics of web objects, web proxy servers and Squid, and artificial neural networks. This is followed by a comprehensive review of cache replacement strategies simulated against different performance metrics. The work then describes a novel approach to web proxy cache replacement that uses neural networks for decision making, evaluates its performance and decision structures, and examines its implementation in a real environment, namely, in the Squid proxy server.

Synopsis Web Caching and Its Applications by : S.V. Nagaraj

The last decade has seen a tremendous growth in the usage of the World Wide Web. The Web has grown so fast that it seems to be becoming an unusable and slow behemoth. Web caching is one way to tame and make this behemoth a friendly and useful giant. The key idea in Web caching is to cache frequently accessed content so that it may be used profitably later. This book focuses entirely on Web caching techniques. Much of the material in this book is very relevant for those interested in understanding the wide gamut of Web caching research. It will be helpful for those interested in making use of the power of the Web in a more profitable way. Audience and purpose of this book This book presents key concepts in Web caching and is meant to be suited for a wide variety of readers including advanced undergraduate and graduate students‚ programmers‚ network administrators‚ researchers‚ teachers‚ techn- ogists and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Synopsis Computer Performance Evaluation. Modelling Techniques and Tools by : Peter Kemper

We are pleased to present the proceedings of Performance TOOLS 2003, the 13th International Conference on Modelling Techniques and Tools for Computer Performance Evaluation. The series of TOOLS conferences has provided a forum for our community of performance engineers with all their diverse interests. TOOLS 2003, held in Urbana, Illinois during September 2–5, 2003, was the most recent meeting of the series, which in the past has been held in the following cities: 1984 Paris 1992 Edinburgh 2000 Chicago 1985 Sophia-Antipolis 1994 Vienna 2002 London 1987 Paris 1995 Heidelberg 2003 Urbana 1988 Palma 1997 Saint Malo 1991 Turin 1998 Palma TheproceedingsoftheTOOLSconferenceshavebeenpublishedbySpringer- Verlag in its LNCS series since 1994. TOOLS2003wasthesecondconferenceintheseriestobeheldinthestateof Illinois, USA. It was one of four component conferences that met together under the umbrella of the 2003 Illinois Multiconference on Measurement, Modelling, and Evaluation of Computer-Communication Systems. Other conferences held inconjunctionwithTOOLS2003werethe10thInternationalWorkshoponPetri Nets and Performance Models (PNPM 2003), the International Conference on the Numerical Solution of Markov Chains (NSMC 2003), and the 6th Inter- tional Workshop on Performability Modeling of Computer and Communication Systems (PMCCS-6). The format allowed for a number of joint components in the programs: the three keynote speakers, the tool demonstrations, the tutorials, and the social events were all shared by the participants of the multiconference. Moreover, the PNPM, TOOLS, and NSMC tracks of the multiconference ran concurrently, so that attendees could choose to attend whichever sessions of those component conferences they wished.

Synopsis Computer Performance Evaluation by : Ramon Puigjaner

The need to evaluate computer and communication systems performance and dependability is continuously growing as a consequence of both the increasing complexity of systems and the user requirements in terms of timing behaviour. The 10th International Conference on Modelling Techniques and Tools for C- puter Performance Evaluation, held in Palma in September 1998, was organised with the aim of creating a forum in which both theoreticians and practitioners could interchange recent techniques, tools, and experiences in these areas. This meeting follows the predecessor conferences of this series: 1984 Paris 1988 Palma 1994 Wien 1985 Sophia Antipolis 1991 Torino 1995 Heidelberg 1987 Paris 1992 Edinburgh 1997 Saint Malo The tradition of this conference series continued this year where many high quality papers were submitted. The Programme Committee had a di cult task in selecting the best papers. Many ne papers could not be included in the program due to space constraints. All accepted papers are included in this volume. Also, a set of submissions describing performance modelling tools was transformed into tool presentations and demonstrations. A brief description of these tools is included in this volume. The following table gives the overall statistics for the submissions.

Synopsis Web Content Caching and Distribution by : Fred Douglis

Web caching and content delivery technologies provide the infrastructure on which systems are built for the scalable distribution of information. This proceedings of the eighth annual workshop, captures a cross-section of the latest issues and techniques of interest to network architects and researchers in large-scale content delivery. Topics covered include the distribution of streaming multimedia, edge caching and computation, multicast, delivery of dynamic content, enterprise content delivery, streaming proxies and servers, content transcoding, replication and caching strategies, peer-to-peer content delivery, and Web prefetching. Web Content Caching and Distribution encompasses all areas relating to the intersection of storage and networking for Internet content services. The book is divided into eight parts: mobility, applications, architectures, multimedia, customization, peer-to-peer, performance and measurement, and delta encoding.
