Synopsis Gauge Theories of the Strong, Weak, and Electromagnetic Interactions by : Chris Quigg

This completely revised and updated graduate-level textbook is an ideal introduction to gauge theories and their applications to high-energy particle physics, and takes an in-depth look at two new laws of nature--quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak theory. From quantum electrodynamics through unified theories of the interactions among leptons and quarks, Chris Quigg examines the logic and structure behind gauge theories and the experimental underpinnings of today's theories. Quigg emphasizes how we know what we know, and in the era of the Large Hadron Collider, his insightful survey of the standard model and the next great questions for particle physics makes for compelling reading. The brand-new edition shows how the electroweak theory developed in conversation with experiment. Featuring a wide-ranging treatment of electroweak symmetry breaking, the physics of the Higgs boson, and the importance of the 1-TeV scale, the book moves beyond established knowledge and investigates the path toward unified theories of strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. Explicit calculations and diverse exercises allow readers to derive the consequences of these theories. Extensive annotated bibliographies accompany each chapter, amplify points of conceptual or technical interest, introduce further applications, and lead readers to the research literature. Students and seasoned practitioners will profit from the text's current insights, and specialists wishing to understand gauge theories will find the book an ideal reference for self-study. Brand-new edition of a landmark text introducing gauge theories Consistent attention to how we know what we know Explicit calculations develop concepts and engage with experiment Interesting and diverse problems sharpen skills and ideas Extensive annotated bibliographies

Synopsis Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions at High Energies by : Maurice Levy

The Cargese Summer Institute 1B75 on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions at High Energies was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (M. LEVY et J. L. BASDEVANT), the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTMANS) and the Universite Catholique de Louvain (D. SPEISER et J. WEYERS) who made in 1973 the first contacts with some lecturers, who, on the advice of NATO, joined th their efforts and worked in common. It was the 16 Summer Insti rd tute held at Cargese and the 3 one organized by the two depart ments of Theoretical Physics at Leuven and Louvain-Ia-Neuve. When the two groups decided (independently) on the subject of the school, they could not know how lucky their choice eventually would turn out to be : rarely has it been possible ~o present an audience with such a great number of new and decisive discoveries who are likely to stimulate the imagination of theoreticians and the research projects of experimentalists alike. Such were the decisive confirmation of the neutral currents, the di-muon events, the slowly decaying new particles, etc. The organizers were grate ful indeed that they could find physicists from almost all great centers of high energy physics who had themselves participated in these discoveries. Although the theorists could not match during the last two years the spectacular success of their experimental colleagues, there has been enough important programs, especially in field theory : renormalization of gauge theories, the Brout Englert-Higgs mechanism, etc. . .

Synopsis Gauge Theories Of Strong, Weak, And Electromagnetic Interactions by : Chris Quigg

This monograph presents a coherent and elementary introduction to Gauge theories of the fundamental interactions and their applications to high-energy physics. It deals with the logic and structure of local Gauge symmetries and Gauge theories, from quantum electrodynamics through unified theories of the interactions among leptons and quarks. Many explicit calculations provide the reader with practice in computing the consequences of these theories and offer a perspective on key experimental investigations. First published in 1983, this text is ideal for a one-semester course on Gauge theories and particle physics. Specialists in particle physics and others who wish to understand the basic ideas of Gauge theories will find it useful as a reference and for self-study.

Synopsis Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei by : Hans Volker Klapdor

Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.
