Survival on earth is impossible without water and hence, water is indispensable for one and all. All forms of life depend on water for sustenance. Availability of water is a challenging quotient for the existence of life on our planet. Fiction writers even predict a world war in the distant future just for water! Unless adequate measures are taken to conserve the available water resources, the supply of this may be at a risk and soon may get exhausted. Scientists say that overexploitation of water would impoverish underground water resources and that the world might in the future turn out to be become a desert soon. In India, the stress on the availability of water is increasing day by day primarily due to population explosion and the raise in the standards of living.

Integrated Assessment of Scale Impacts of Watershed Interventions is the outcome of a multi-disciplinary research team of social scientists, hydrologists (groundwater and surface water), modellers; and bio-physical scientists who have worked together over five years to develop an integrated model of the sustainability of biophysical, economic and social impacts of watersheds. Impacts of watershed interventions are assessed at upstream, mid-stream and downstream locations of two hydrological units that are characterised with differential bio-physical attributes. The editors propose that watershed interventions, when integrated with hydro-geology and bio-physical aspects, have greater influence on the resilience of the socio-ecological system. This proceedings volume contains papers and extended abstracts presented at the International Conference on Sustainable Watershed Management (SuWaMa 2014). The Conference was the second in a series of Sustainable Watershed Management Conferences. The objective of the Conference Series was to present and discuss advanced environmental models and contemporary decision support tools for the sustainable use and development of watersheds. Contributions cover the following topics: sound watershed management practices (case studies and examples from various countries including lessons learned from implementation of both successful and deficient management scenarios), decision support tools (such as monitoring, GIS, ecological economics, cost/benefit analysis and decision making models), integrated environmental model applications for management (including watershed, air-shed, coastal, and living resource models), trans-boundary environmental issues (air pollution, climate change, coastal oceans at regional, continental, and global scales) and global watershed sustainability. This multidisciplinary volume will benefit natural and social scientists, engineers, managers and other professionals as well as stakeholders with an interest in water resources and their management.

International and local stakeholders are being engaged to alleviate the global environmental and livelihood challenges affecting the rural community. NGOs are helping to share these burdens by implementing community projects that address environmental and livelihood issues in rural communities. However, implementing such community projects is challenging for several reasons. One of the main challenges is considering viable implementation strategies applied as pragmatic instruments to community projects. The pragmatic instruments of participatory environmental communication that consider environmental communication, non-formal environmental education, stakeholders' participation and environmental conflicts are the major tenets used to implement community projects in the rural society in Ethiopia. These implementation strategies are best sought by a local NGO working on an Environment and Forest Development Program aimed at improving Ethiopia's environment and rural society's livelihood. Although it has ups and downs, the NGO has vast experience of implementing community projects. The experiences provide solid solutions for the viability of community projects.

Watershed management has gained momentum over the past decade as a holistic way of conserving water, land and biodiversity resources while sustaining livelihoods. Over the past few decades, the frequency and severity of natural and human-induced disasters have increased across Asia. These disasters lead to substantial loss of life, livelihoods and community assets, which not only threatens the pace of socio-economic development, but also undo hard-earned gains. Extreme events and disasters such as floods, droughts, heat, fire, cyclones and tidal surges are known to be exacerbated by environmental changes including climate change, land-use changes and natural resource degradation. Increasing climate variability and multi-dimensional vulnerabilities have severely affected the social, ecological and economic capacities of the people in the region who are, economically speaking, those with the least capacity to adapt. Climatic and other environmental hazards and anthropogenic risks, coupled with weak and wavering capacities, severely impact the ecosystems and Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP) and, thereby, to human well-being. Long-term resilience building through disaster risk reduction and integrated adaptive climate planning, therefore, has become a key priority for scientists and policymakers alike.
